JOURNAL STANDARD meets Delicious vol.02
Journal Standard meets American youth culture, more independent than ever before.
The recent developments at "Journal Standard" have been interesting. Originally, the store had a strong, authentic impression of American casual, sports, and outdoor wear, but in the past few seasons, a new guiding principle can be seen in its development. This is especially evident this season, which marks the shop's 20th anniversary.lookbookproduction and the LA music label STONES THROW.pop-up storeand "T2 Trainspotting" in the sequel to the film "Trainspotting".Collaboration Items. and other stimulating approaches that, in a positive sense, betray the public image of the company to date.
The newest addition to the Journal Standard lineup is a shop-in-shop for Delicious, a select store in Sendai, which offers a variety of independent American brands. The new shop-in-shop, which features a number of independent American brands, is a new twist on the Journal Standard brand lineup, which has never been seen before. Here, we focus on four of the brands lined up at the shop-in-shop. We will introduce them in two parts, mainly through interviews with the makers. The second part is inTALL CAN BOYZand the photographer, Joon.TINO RAZO〉.
Independent brands are gaining momentum on a global scale. Among them, the appeal of brands based on skateboarding culture has always excited us. Currently based in LA, they are connecting with communities around the U.S., and are sharing their lifestyle through their zines, skate videos, and apparel.TALL CAN BOYZ. is one of the most hotly anticipated brands in the industry. We interviewed Chris, the brand's central figure and a beer and skateboarding enthusiast.
Can you give us some background on "Tall Can Boys" (TCB)?
Chris. We started TCB because we were a bunch of friends from different cities in the US, each doing cool things. We documented the cultural aspects of each city and how crazy we were living, using 35mm cameras. So it was only natural for us to make a zine. It's about sharing our way of life with you.
How did you come up with the name TCB?
Chris.Because we drink a lot of long cans of beer!
Can you tell us about the city where Chris was born and raised?
Chris.Born and raised on the East Coast. I grew up skating in Washington DC and Virginia, going to punk gigs, and being naughty. Shout out to Nelson Rodriguez! I wouldn't be where I am today without him.
Where do you live now? And why do you like it there?
Chris.I live in LA now. . I love it because it has the best things, the perfect climate, and an empty pool with no water in it.
What are you looking out for in LA these days?
Chris. The best thing about LA is the culture. It's a real West Coast thing. Low riders, Palm Trees, and skateboarding . Jeff Cutter's Boys of Summer is cool, to name a few brands. Javier Nunez just started Slow Clays, which is also cool. Fuck the dorks!
TCB produces many zines. What kind of message do you want to convey, and what do you want to express through your zines?
Chris.. we all take pictures on film consistently. I think that's why we are able to create content. And I'm a graphic artist, so the zine is a good outlet for me to showcase my artwork. I create concepts and artwork for the zine based on the photos. The message of the zine is to enjoy your life! Enjoy your life! Through TCB, I want to express a way of life that is different from the one that is prescribed. Not everyone gets to experience something like what we do, right? So we want to bring that to people through our zines and skate videos.
How do you come up with design ideas?
Chris. Most of the designs come from hanging out with Hommi and coming up with things that reflect our lifestyle. Most of my inspiration comes from music, my surroundings, and the junk I've been collecting for years.
Who are your fave artists?
Chris. It's hard to pick a fave artist... , but I guess Robert Crumb.
What is your dream?
Chris.Free Beer and Free Weed.
What are TCB's plans for the future?
Chris. We just keep doing what we do. Making lots of videos , lots of zines , lots of clothes . Well, you can count on it!
