How are creative shapes created?

Who are the hottest designers right now? If you were to ask this question to people in the fashion industry, I am sure that many would name Hedo Maynar. While paying respect to tradition and authenticity, the clothes he creates are all contemporary. He pursues his own unique expression, moving freely between traditional and mode. The up-and-coming designer and the Spanish fashion brand "Desigual" have announced a collaboration. What kind of attention to detail is packed into the 11 items designed from a genderless point of view? And what is the story behind his design philosophy? We visited Mr. Desigual, who was visiting Japan for the first time.

The shapes themselves are designed as if they were sculptures.

How did you feel when you received the offer to collaborate with "Desigual" this time?

Hed Maynor:I was very happy when I received the offer. My field is only a part of the fashion world, and by collaborating with Desigual, I can reach a wider audience. I felt it was a great opportunity for me.

When I saw this collection, I felt a strong sense of "Hedemeiner" style. Is there anything you were conscious of when designing this collection?

Hed Maynor:I consider "Hedmaynner" designs to be more conceptual, but this time, since I was designing in the "Desigual" field, I tried to make the design more casual. At the same time, I was conscious of maintaining the proportions and shapes that are characteristic of "Hedmainer.

I think this goes along with what you said earlier about shape.

Hed Maynor:There is something about classic clothing, including old workwear and military wear, that links to me. My background is deeply rooted in the Mediterranean culture, and I draw a lot of inspiration from the workers' clothing there. There, the clothes are made in a very industrial and simple way, and I am attracted to such techniques. As I mentioned earlier, this is a collaboration to reach a wider audience, so it was also a good fit with that kind of simplified approach.

Why is it that when we look at the finished garments, they feel so new and modern, while paying homage to what is authentic and traditional in your designs?

Hed Maynor:We are very happy to receive such feedback. However, we are not doing anything ingenious to make it that way.

Do you have a favorite item from this collection?

Hed Maynor:The striped set-up is my favorite. This item was the very first one we made. However, I believe that our identity is conveyed through all the products in the collection. So rather than looking at individual items, I would be happy if you can get a sense of something by looking at the collection as a whole.

It feels more like a "wrap" or "cloak" that wraps around the body, rather than a "garment". Are you conscious of this feeling?

Hed Maynor:That's right. I was very conscious of wrapping the body. Through this kind of design, I did not emphasize any part of the body, but rather, I created the clothes as if they were one with the wearer. It was as if I was designing the shape itself, from head to toe, as if I were creating a sculpture. This is my concept, and it is one of my favorite points in this collection.
