-What kind of band is Sonic Youth for you, Shimazu-san?
In the early 80's, it was reimagined in the vein of the NY art style of the Velvet Underground, MC5, Stooges, Ramones and Television, which could only be described as sonic youth, or alternative. There is a sense in their music of being at once delicate and punk, subculture and avant-garde art, intelligence and savagery, and so on. I was greatly influenced not only by their music, but also by their artwork.
-If you had to pick one favorite song, which would it be?
If I had to choose one to think back to when I was in my 20s, it would be "Teenage Riot" from "Daydream Nation" for its sense of freedom and humor. When I first heard the song, I was impressed by the dissonant guitar playing, and the sense of running without knowing why was the best part of the song. It's a song that I really like. It's like a "teenage riot".

-What are the key points of today's styling?
When I was asked to do this shoot, I was searching through Sonic Youth's records and collections and came across a fan club newsletter. It was cool that it was composed of monotone colors, so I took inspiration from that and styled it mainly in black.
-I see. It's a nice style with the scent of music that is typical of Shimazu-san.
At my age, I think it's cooler to wear chic and casual clothes without trying too hard to coordinate. It's like riding a mama bike with this (laughs). Also, maybe I don't like to match new items with new items. That's why I chose an 80's "BARACUTA" jacket.

How did you like the T-shirt you wore?
The fabric is good, and the size is very modern. I like both vintage tattered ones and new ones, so I wear them according to my mood at the time. I really like the graphic on the back of the T-shirt, which has a very carefree look to it.

-Vintage band T-shirts have become like collectible items as their prices have skyrocketed.
I think subculture T-shirts are meant to be worn. There's also a decaying quality to them. A boot might be okay, but it's not good if it's overpriced. Then, I think it is better to buy these new, authentic T-shirts in a healthy way, wear them carefully, and turn them into old clothes, which will lead to the next step. Rock T's should be nurtured.
