01 Running makes you aware , inside and outside of yourself.

Tatsuro Yasui, who lives in Tokyo, enjoys running in the morning on a daily basis.
I run about 4 times a week . . The distance is about 6 or 7 kilometers per run. I often run with my wife, so we can easily fit each other's schedules in the morning.
Four times a week is quite a frequency. How long have you been running?
I started when I was about 27 years old, so it's been almost 10 years now. I don't remember how it all started, but I found that it had become a habit. It's part of my daily life now. I have always enjoyed physical exercise, and I played soccer all through my school years, but I thought that running was a good sport that I could do casually. Because it is an individual sport, I can run as soon as I feel like it, and all I need is a pair of shoes. I also like to run when I travel, so I bring my running shoes with me, and running in the morning to get to know the city is one of the best parts of traveling.

Yasui demands a certain level of intensity in running. One of the barometers of that response is whether or not you sweat.
I want to work up a good sweat, so I run at a certain speed. I'm not the type to push myself too hard, but if I'm going to spend a lot of time doing it, I want to move my body until I feel properly fatigued. So afterwards, I definitely want to take a shower and wash my hair."

I often hear from runners about the positive effects running has on their minds and bodies. In Yasui's case, what changes have occurred as a result of running?
. my awareness of my body has changed a lot. Daily running is a good way for me to check the state of my body and mind, but what is especially important is the mental part. There are very few times in modern daily life when I don't think about anything or touch my cell phone. It is important for me to make such time to clear my mind. I sometimes find myself thinking about work deadlines or other things while running, but at those times I try to pick up the pace a bit and not think about them. Running is an important time for me to refresh myself.

Moving the body and emptying the mind seems to bring not only a pleasant feeling, but also a byproduct.
I think running clears my thoughts, and afterwards, when I'm showering, I get some good ideas. . I think it makes my thoughts flat. If I don't run for two or three days, I feel sick! I feel sick.

And running is not just an act of introspection, he said, but leads to an awareness of the world around him.
I love mountain climbing, and I feel refreshed when I am in the midst of rich nature, but the parks in Tokyo where I run have a different kind of nature than the mountains, and they are very pleasant. Mornings are especially beautiful, and I really enjoy the change of seasons when I run throughout the year. Right now is the season of fresh greenery, so when I see the plants and trees, I feel the daily changes.
