Kumagai-san, you have your own store in Yutenji.
Kumagaya: My hometown is along the Toyoko Line, so I started living alone in Yutenji after I got a job. There is a vintage clothing store called "Tranpot," which I really liked and had been going to for a long time. I ended up quitting my job and working there. When I was 24 years old, I became independent and started my own store here. I have been living in Yutenji for a long time.
Do you have a favorite genre of vintage clothing?
Kumagaya: At first, I liked French vintage clothing, but I think American casual was in the background. After that, I started to sell American items in the store, and now I am also selling a lot of European items. In that sense, the boundaries are disappearing. Recently, there are more and more items from Thailand and other Southeast Asian countries. I think it is possible to study clothes in many different countries, so I am trying not to narrow my perspective.

Do you also wear outdoor clothes?
Kumagaya: That is exactly the kind of clothing I wore the most from Woolrich. I bought a mountain parka when I was a student and wore that a lot, and I also had pants that looked like knickerbockers, which I also collected. So I am very happy to be able to participate in this project (laughs).
Why are you attracted to Woolrich?
Kumagaya: I sometimes wear clothes from other outdoor brands, but when I first started liking vintage clothing, I often saw "Woolrich" at vintage clothing stores. I was very much influenced by Woolrich, which was easy for students to afford and had a universal design that suited all kinds of people. I used to wear them a lot.

How do you like the new jacket?
Kumagaya: I think it's a warm, new kind of clothing. It inherits the tradition of "Woolrich," but has been updated with Gore-Tex. Now we are having more rain squalls in Japan, and I am glad that this jacket can cope with such weather conditions. The shorter length makes it easy for young people to wear, and I think another important point is that it is also friendly to women.

What did you have in mind for the coordination?
Kumagaya: I will be turning 40 soon, so I wanted to have a nice old man look. I chose corduroy pants, and I think this material was originally used for hunting and such. With this background in mind, I tried to create an outdoorsy look.
