. Mochizuki's origins have been influenced by music.

Yui Mochizuki has styled various musicians and actors as well as magazines and advertisements. With her mode styling, she has developed a new style that is not bound by existing concepts. On the other hand, she has been actively involved in the fashion industry by launching her own brand, which is separate from her work as a stylist, and she is always stimulating the fashion scene. In his private life, he is an avid outdoorsman and enjoys activities such as camping and fishing. He also enjoys camping and fishing. He is involved in a variety of activities other than fashion, and makes the most of them in his own activities.

This time, we caught up with Mochizuki on a day of mountain stream fishing. Riding the Wrangler Unlimited, he headed for Kosuge Village in Yamanashi Prefecture .

I am from Fujinomiya, Shizuoka Prefecture, and there were only mountains and rivers around my house. The only entertainment we had was fishing. So I have been fishing since I can remember. I fished all the way through elementary school, and in junior high and high school I was in a band because I liked music. We played gigs in our hometown, and at that time, I thought I would continue to play in a band for a long time to come.

People who are respected by those around them always have a "style" or "way of life. In Mr. Mochizuki's case, music is at the center of his style. He has an impulsive admiration for rock music and is influenced not only by the visuals of the artists, but also by their sincere attitude toward music and the culture that emerges from it.

When I was in a band in Shizuoka, there were a lot of punks. (Laughs.) That is why I was so influenced by punk. I learned the idea and attitude of breaking down and reconstructing existing concepts from punk. Punk is a rebellion against the existing.

Mochizuki, who had been playing in a band since junior high school, moved to Tokyo after graduation.

My parents run a pork cutlet shop, and I was originally going to take over the business, but my father told me to go train as a butcher after I graduated from high school. . So I first got a job at a butcher shop in Tokyo. . Ostensibly, that was how it was, but in reality, I wanted to play in a band in Tokyo, so the reason could be anything (laughs). The band members also moved to Tokyo at the same time, and we played together for a while, but things started to diverge a bit from the kind of music I wanted to pursue, so I decided to leave the band. The band itself broke up once, but we got back together and are still active today.

. the day I decided to live as a stylist.

While passionate about music, Mochizuki also had a desire for fashion, and was influenced by the style of Jean-Paul Belmondo, who appeared in the movie "Shall We Go Our Own Way" in the 80's, a time when various cultures were emerging.

When I was in high school, I liked French movies and saw Godard's "Shall we go without permission? Anyway, I had a yearning for Paris, and I went there for the first time in my senior year of high school. At the time, I loved Christopher Nemeth's clothes, and I used to do live shows in them.

In the 80's, the fashion scene in Japan was beginning to flourish. After visiting Paris alone, Ms. Mochizuki said that even against this historical background, she still felt a gap between the Japanese fashion scene and those overseas.

He said, "Up until then, music had been a big part of my life, but just around the time when the RUN-D.M.C. style was introduced to Japan, I suddenly became passionate about fashion. One of my sources of information, "Treasure Island," also featured hip-hop, and I was surprised to see Adidas jerseys and sneakers without laces, and I thought, "This is fashion? I was surprised and thought, "This is fashion? Looking back now, I think that may have been the beginning of my fashion career.

It was a few years after moving to Tokyo that Mr. Mochizuki decided to become a stylist. He quit his job at a butcher shop and worked part-time to make ends meet, and one day the word "stylist" suddenly caught his attention.

I was looking at magazines and thinking, "I wonder if I could do the job of dressing people? I thought, "I like clothes, and I might be good at it. . I like clothes, and I thought I might be good at that kind of thing. So I decided to become an assistant, and I met my mentor, Kazuo Ishima, and learned a lot from him. The day after our first meeting, I was invited to work at a studio where we were shooting an advertisement, and I thought to myself, "There is a world like this! I still remember thinking, 'I'm going to make a living here. My mentor and I had the same taste in music, and we talked about many things. He also took care of me in my private life, taking me to movies and clubs, etc. I was his assistant for about two years, and it was a really rich time.

Later, Mochizuki became an independent stylist and worked for a variety of magazines. His first job was for the legendary fashion magazine "Jap", for which photographer Kaoru Ishima served as editor-in-chief.

For my first job, I created a fashion page on the theme of AIDS. It was quite well-received, and I went around to various places marketing it as my own work, and I started getting a lot of work. I was able to work on styling for musicians such as Blankey Jet City, SMAP, Utada Hikaru, and Theatre Brook, as well as costumes for actor Hiroshi Mikami. I think I had a very good time.

It has been 23 years since he became a stylist for a living. What professional convictions has Mr. Mochizuki held throughout that time?

. It's about making the styling look classy. The rock and punk elements that I am influenced by and that are reflected in my styling tend to be vulgar if expressed as they are. However, I am conscious of sublimating them to a classy look through the choice of models and the combination of coordination.

Styling in the image is boring. . How to break the rules and create something new. This way of thinking is linked to the punk philosophy that is Mr. Mochizuki's starting point.

I've been through a lot of styles," he says, "mode, street, American casual, British . I have been through all styles, so I like to mix them well and create something new. Because it is a mixture of various elements, it may look deja vu at first glance, but upon closer inspection, you will discover something new (laughs). (Laughs) I always want to create that kind of style.

The stylist is a DJ , the designer is a composer.

In addition to styling in a variety of fields, he has also developed his own brand as a director, starting with RICO in 2002 and HOWL in 2009.

I had never done any designing before, but I happened to know someone who suggested I give it a try, and that's how RICO got started. I had never designed before, but I happened to know someone who asked me if I wanted to try it, and that's how RICO started. I started making clothes inspired by "rock," which is my origin. At the time, I was working for other people, but I really wanted to create a brand based solely on my own sensibilities, so I launched "HOWL" after that. At that time, I was already working more as a designer than a stylist. Making clothes was fun, but at the same time, it was very hard work. It is of course the same when creating clothes, but it is also impossible to manage them well and get them off the ground without a half-hearted attitude. I learned firsthand how difficult it is to keep a brand going.

Stylist and designer . Both are involved in creating new styles through fashion, but they are different professions, according to Mochizuki.

. Stylists are like DJs in music. . A stylist is like a DJ in music, using the finished clothes to create a coordinated look, just like connecting songs. But a designer's job is to create the "tune. In the case of styling, I often get ideas by looking at other people's outfits, but when designing clothes, it is much more conceptual and difficult to grasp the source of ideas. That is where I felt the difficulty as a designer.

Currently, Mochizuki has launched a denim brand called "Apple & Attitude" and is involved in the brand's operations under the title of creative director.

In addition to myself, I work with a team of pattern makers, press, and sales staff. I am in charge of branding, store interior design, and creating a world view, not design. We have just started up, but I hope you will pay attention to us.

Fishing is a great way to forget about many things.

Mr. Mochizuki's two main focuses are music and fashion. In addition to these two pillars, there is one more thing that he values. That is fishing. Whenever he has time, he takes his fishing gear and goes out to fish by himself.

I work with people, so sometimes I just want to be alone . That's when I go fishing. I can become somewhat free. When I just concentrate on fishing, my mind becomes empty and I can relax.

Mochizuki says with a laugh that he always loses track of time when he goes fishing. When asked what else attracts him to the area, he replied that he is a stylist who handles a lot of clothes.

I also enjoy collecting tools. When I go to a fishing tackle shop, there are so many tools to choose from, and I like to spend time thinking about how I am going to use them. Of course, there is also the joy of actually using them, isn't there? That's what makes it fun. I just started mountain stream fishing this year, but I am quite into it. I was happy to catch a fish today.

When he goes fishing on the river, he gets in his car and drives to his destination. He camps there and wakes up at dawn to go fishing.

. and I like the time I spend driving my car. . I think about things in a daze. . I think about work, new projects, and so on. I think it is often when I am in the car that I come up with ideas.

The Wrangler Unlimited is a car that matches urban life.

Mr. Mochizuki says that cars are an essential part of his life. He has driven three "Jeeps" in his life.

My first car was a second-generation Cherokee called the XJ when I was 30 years old. . At the time, I was driving a second-generation Cherokee called the XJ. After that, I drove some domestic cars, but I decided that I wanted a Jeep, so I came back to the Liberty (the third generation Cherokee). And now I drive a four-door Wrangler Unlimited.

Why Mr. Mochizuki chooses to buy a "Jeep" . I'm curious about that.

. After all, I like square cars. . I'm kind of uncomfortable with round cars. I have looked at domestic cars and many other SUVs, but I think Jeeps are cool. They are so rugged and manly (laughs). (Laughs.) It has no frills, and I feel attached to Jeep.

The Wrangler Unlimited that Mr. Mochizuki drove this time is the same model that he drives on a regular basis. Why did Mr. Mochizuki choose this car?

As I mentioned earlier, I originally drove a 'Liberty,' but when the four-door Wrangler Unlimited came out, I always wanted one. As far as ruggedness goes, it's probably the best Jeep in the market. I told my wife about it, and she said, "Why not? I told my wife about it, and she thought it would be a good idea, so we switched.

The Wrangler Unlimited that Mr. Mochizuki usually drives is khaki in color, which gives it a somewhat austere impression. He likes the color because it is an unusual color. On the other hand, how did the black color that Mr. Mochizuki drove this time look to him?

. the impression is that the hard image of the Jeep is more pronounced. It's urban, it has a calm atmosphere, and black is nice."

When asked about comfort and functionality, Mochizuki continued, "I am very satisfied.

Most cars today start their engines with the push of a button, but the Wrangler Unlimited is designed to be started by inserting a key. I like the primitive feel of it. It makes you feel like you're ready to drive! (laughs). Also, the air conditioning works great, and the sound quality of the speakers is perfect. And since I am a stylist, I have a lot of luggage with a lot of outfits, but this car has a large capacity, so I don't have to worry about not being able to carry all of my stuff. I have no complaints at all.

In addition to this, Mr. Mochizuki mentioned the compatibility with urban life.

. it's not a compact car, but it can go on narrow roads and you don't have to worry about oncoming traffic. . It's not a compact car, but it can go on narrow roads, and you don't have to worry about oncoming cars. It can fit in a parking lot of this size, and it is a car that is very suitable for urban life. Of course, I can use it not only for work, but also for camping and fishing. It seems to fit my current lifestyle.

. not being misled by anything, and going forward without bending to one's beliefs.

Music, fashion, and fishing . Mr. Mochizuki told us about his attitude to seriously face and enjoy each of these things. Finally, he shared with us what he considers to be his code of conduct.

The phrase "Keep the faith" is always in my mind. It is a phrase often shouted by heavy metal bands, and it means "Keep the faith. In other words, even though we may face many challenges in life, let's keep going forward without bending what we believe in! In other words, even in the midst of life's many challenges, keep going with what you believe in! I have been doing what I want to do for a long time, believing in these words.

In his long journey as a stylist, Mr. Mochizuki, who has been pursuing his career straight down the road with music, his starting point, at the center, has a persuasive power that only he could have.

. "When you work in fashion, you have to deal with all kinds of trends. But I will not be influenced by them, and I will continue to do what I do, believing in what I like and my own sensibilities. I am freelance, and of course there are times when I feel anxious, but I feel that if I keep my faith and do my best, no matter what happens, I will be able to live comfortably for a long time.
