An urban outdoor trip. Bike to the nature that is just around the corner.

The warm sunshine and pleasant air lured me to go out and play. If possible, I wanted to do something light, something that would take me away from my usual town and give me a change of pace. To get an idea of what to expect, we met with people who enjoy outdoor activities while based in Tokyo. My companion was Columbia's "Shandals," a pair of outdoor shoes that are a combination of sneakers and sandals. This time, we met Kathryn Earnshaw, who makes and sells vegan snacks, and took a short bike ride.

No destination in mind. I just ride my bicycle through the city.

The bicycle is taken for granted, but it is, in fact, quite an excellent vehicle.

They can go at their own pace, emit no exhaust gas, and are not dependent on oil. If they are carefully maintained, they can be ridden for a long time. It is precisely because we live in such an era that the value of bicycles is being reevaluated worldwide, and bicycle lanes are being built in many countries. Incidentally, in Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, an environmentally advanced country, about 60% of the citizens use bicycles regularly, and thanks to this, there is less traffic congestion and the air is cleaner.

Recently, the term "pottering" has become increasingly heard in Japan. Pottering is a concept that originated in the 1960s and refers to a leisurely stroll on a bicycle with no destination in mind. It is a leisurely way to enjoy bicycling that is the opposite of cycling, which emphasizes speed and competitiveness.

Especially in a dense city like Tokyo, pottering offers small discoveries that would be missed by a car, and easy access to places that are difficult to reach by train. It gives you a wider range of activities than walking, and you can feel the breath of the city better than by car.

Catherine Earnshaw of Homecoming Vegan Baked GOODS" (Homecoming), which makes vegan baked goods, almost always travels by bicycle, both on work days and on her days off. She almost never takes a car or train. She often goes for a walk on her bicycle without a destination in mind. Today, we took her on a potter's tour of Tokyo.
