STONE ISLAND’s “Prototype Research” project continues to pursue innovation through the development of garments that utilize materials and processing techniques born from research and experimentation that have yet to be industrialized. Rather than mass production, this project deliberately adopts a limited-production format to purely express the brand’s essence, and has been released intermittently since its launch in 2016.
Then, on Saturday, January 17, the latest installment, “Prototype Research_Series 09,” was finally unveiled at Milan Fashion Week.
The ninth installment in the series features a reversible hooded cardigan crafted using the innovative garment construction technique known as “Air Blow Lamination Knit.” Featuring a meticulous construction that evokes the brand’s tradition of redefining knitwear as outerwear, the level of craftsmanship is so evident that it’s clear a great deal of time and effort went into its creation.
Stone Island is also known for its exquisite color palettes—ones that are hard to put into words—and this collection features a lineup of 100 colors ranging from vibrant hues to subdued tones and heathered shades. What’s more, it’s amazing to think that every single piece is one-of-a-kind.
The technique of directly bonding the waterproof and breathable “HDry® Membrane” to knit fabric using a 3D process that employs cutting-edge lamination technology represents an unprecedented endeavor in garment design. The unique character created by the slight irregularities in the bonding process between the knit and the membrane is the very essence of this design, representing a new form of expression from Stone Island, a brand that approaches development with a stoic dedication every day.
