“Shirakaba-so” is a place where you can step back from the hustle and bustle of daily life, surrender to the passage of time, and reconnect with your inner "primitive sensibility." The building is “Shirakaba-so,” a former lecture hall built in 1963. It has been revitalized using local materials and the skills of local craftsmen, and we have deliberately chosen to retain the name “Shirakaba-so.”
The kitchen features a counter made from a combination of local andesite and granite, as well as a dining table crafted from camphor wood over 150 years old, both of which command attention; the three guest rooms are unified by a traditional Japanese aesthetic.
The Finnish-style sauna, with its soothing high-pitched sound, and the hot spring bath—featuring a tub crafted from an abundance of Gunma-grown cypress and fed by a natural spring—are reason enough to pay a visit.
”I've always felt uneasy about being told, ”This is what's good for you.” After all, your body should know best what it needs. Shirakaba-so is a place where you can listen to that inner voice once again. I believe that it's only through the inconveniences and the effort involved that you can truly discover what's ”just right for you right now.'"
As Mr. Mota of states in his statement, “Shirakaba-so” is a place where you can gently awaken the senses that have grown dull amid the hustle and bustle of daily life, and restore balance to both body and mind. Alongside the changing seasons of nature, the moments of tranquility found here—experiences unique to this place—are not limited to a single visit.
With each changing season, the reasons for visiting and the ways you spend your time there evolve. Just as with each journey, the experience of deepening your connection is sure to enrich your life.
