Tonya Harding, a former figure skater, was the first American woman and the second person in history to successfully perform a triple axel, but she instantly became a worldwide hater. The much-talked-about film about her, "I, Tonya: The Greatest Scandal in History," will open in TOHO Cinemas Chanter and other theaters nationwide on May 4 (Fri., holiday).
~STORY~.
Tonya Harding (Margot Robbie) was raised strictly from an early age in a poor family. With her talent and hard work, she became the first American to successfully perform the triple axel and twice made the Olympic team, in Albertville in 1992 and Lillehammer in 1994. However, the downfall of her skating career began when a friend of her husband, Jeff Gilooly (Sebastian Stan), attacked Tonya's rival, Nancy Kerrigan. This is the story of Tonya's tumultuous life, once glorious and loved by all of America, then banished from the figure world and turned into a professional boxer.
The film is based on a series of interviews with Tonya and other people involved in the "attack on rivals" for the right to compete in the 1994 Lillehammer Olympics. Margot Robbie and Allison Janay, who played the lead and her mother, respectively, were nominated for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress at the Academy Awards. Filmed under the megaphone of Craig Gillespie's ( "Lars and the Girl" ), the film has been so well received that it has swept the awards race in the United States and around the world.
