Curated by photographer Yoshihiko Ueda, the photo gallery "916," housed in a studio, has an industrial and tranquil atmosphere, making it a suitable space to confront photography. In the past, the gallery has hosted exhibitions by Ueda himself, Kazumi Kurigami, Daido Moriyama, and Rinko Kawauchi, among others.
This time, the horses captured by Charlotte Dumas, a native of the Netherlands, can be viewed in this space. She has taken portraits of wolves, dogs, and various other animals, and has raised various themes about the diverse relationships and relations between animals and humans in modern society.
The subject of this exhibition was a breed of horse that even we Japanese are not familiar with: the native Japanese horse. There are eight species of horses that are native to Japan and have remained largely uninterbred with non-native breeds such as stallions, but many of them are in danger of extinction due to their small populations. Most of them live on small islands and are not allowed to move to other places at all.
On the one hand, we see animals as a source of food and raise them, and on the other hand, we anthropomorphize them and become attached to them. Such a contradictory relationship between humans and animals brings about various realizations, such as the contradictory relationship between humans and animals. Thinking about this relationship is also about how we value the existence of the animals.
It is good to ponder such a profound and complex question. The gallery has a magnetic field that makes you want to think about such things.
