TRANSIT" is a magazine that satisfies intellectual curiosity with beautiful photographs, travelogues, and academic articles on travel and culture. It is still fresh in our minds that TRANSIT has been renewed from a style that featured one country for an entire issue to one theme for a single issue.
TRANSIT" will be released on November 4 (Fri.), and the release party will be held at VACANT in Harajuku on November 3 (Thu.), the night before the issue goes on sale.
The islands of Amami and Ryukyu float in an arc from Kyushu to Taiwan. Just as the Galápagos Islands have evolved a unique biological environment, these islands, far from the mainland, have developed a unique culture, customs, and ecosystem that can only be found here. For example, it is home to countless rare species such as the Iriomote wildcat and the Amami rabbit, and is considered a biological paradise. Its ecosystems and high biodiversity are rare in the world, and the registration of the site as a World Natural Heritage site in 2018 is attracting much attention. In TRANSIT, we traveled to four such World Heritage candidate areas, Amami Oshima, Tokunoshima, Yanbaru, and Iriomotejima, to explore their charms.
The eve of the festival also features interesting events. For example, in the first part, the photographers and the editorial staff will introduce secret stories they saw and heard about the coverage, ranging from unexpected behind-the-scenes stories to local Bon Odori dance videos. . There is also a "shima-uta lecture" comparing folk songs of Amami and Ryukyu, given by Hajime Oishi, a music writer/DJ who studies folk songs from all over Japan, and Daisuke Nara, a djembe player from Amami. In the second part, there will be an authentic shima-uta LIVE by the two members of Maburi and an out-of-season Bon dance. Food from Amami and Ryukyu, drinks such as Seasargafu (Orion Beer x Seekwasa) and brown sugar shochu, which are essential for the festival, will also be available. The "Amami-Ryukyu" issue will also be on sale in advance.
. The eve of the event is as if a two-dimensional magazine had been set up in three dimensions. Not only those who like "TRANSIT", but also those who are interested in Ryukyu and Amami culture are welcome to visit the event. If the event is registered as a World Heritage site, it is quite possible that tourists will rush to the site and make it difficult to visit, so now is the time to check it out!
