The Shogi world has been attracting a great deal of attention since the great breakthrough of Fujii 4-dan. In this world of many talented Shogi players, there are many stories of setbacks and a few stories of rebirth.
This film, "The Miracle of the Crying Shottois a film adaptation of "The Miracle of Crying Shottan" (Kodansha Bunko), an autobiographical work by Shoji Segawa 5-dan, a unique player who brought a miracle to the world of Shogi, directed by Toshiaki Toyoda. Ryuhei Matsuda will play the solo lead role in Toyoda's film for the first time in 16 years since "Blue Spring," and the film will be on roadshow nationwide from fall 2018.
~STORY~.
Shoji Segawa a.k.a. Shyotan was a simple, quiet, and unremarkable player, but the first time he was recognized by those around him was for playing shogi. Through encounters with rivals and masters, he rapidly improved his skills and joined the Encouragement Association, a gateway to success for professional players. However, under the pressure of the ironclad rule of "promotion to 4-dan by the age of 26," he was unable to win at the crucial moment...and finally, the age limit prevented him from joining the association and he was forced to withdraw. Shoji is stricken with despair and a sense of loss from his great setback. However, what remained was his love for shogi and the support of his friends. He was able to experience the joy of Shogi once again, and his unprecedented attempt to become a professional player begins, having made his mark as an amateur!
Ryuhei Matsuda, who plays the main character Shoji Segawa, won the Japan Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role for "Arranging the Boat" and numerous other awards, and has appeared in a number of Toyoda's films including "Blue Spring," "Nine Souls," and "I'M FLASH! In addition, Yojiro Noda of the popular rock band Radwimps, who is also a close friend of Matsuda's, was cast as Yuno Suzuki, the best friend and biggest rival who supports the main character's professional chess player entrance examination. Director Toshiaki Toyoda, who himself aspired to become a professional shogi player and was a member of the Shinkishi Shorei Association until the age of 17, depicts his frustration and rebirth in this film. It is an inspiring success story that really happened in the world of Shogi.
