The works on display are a record of Hanzawa's fresh 70s, when he continued to snap the shutter for world-famous musicians such as Tom Waits, Lou Reed, Jimmy Cliff, Rick Danko, Little Feat, and many others. Click here to read his comments on this exhibition.
In 1972, after returning from a trip to India, he visited New Music Magazine, which was at the height of its popularity at the time, with the photographs he had taken. Luckily, the photos were published in the magazine the following year, and he was subsequently asked to shoot for the magazine. It was an unexpected turn of events that led him to start photographing rock musicians. One of the most impressive was Tom Waits. I arrived the day before the event, but the venue was empty, so I took the liberty of going backstage to find Tom Waits sitting alone at the piano rehearsing. I was fascinated by his unique appearance and involuntarily snapped the shutter. In fact, that one photo was the catalyst for me to enter the world of advertising. Facing those photos for the first time in decades, I can recall my exuberance at the time and the enthusiasm of the young people who were crazy about the music of rock music. (omitted).
I wonder how Hanzawa-san was moved and how he felt in front of the famous musician. We who live in the present day cannot know, but we can imagine and feel through photographs. This is the greatest appeal of the photographic medium of documentation.

Based in Tokyo for over 50 years, he is still active as a photographer and cinematographer.
