This one we told you about the other day.NEWS ArticleDo you remember the It's a cafe in the Jinnan area of Shibuya calledROASTED COFFEE LABORATORYIn conjunction with the renewal of the "K" series, an in-store event was held on Sunday, March 17, to commemorate the renewal.
The event consisted of a talk show titled "SHIBUYA COFFEE TALK" and an in-store live performance by "Kiseru," a unit of brothers from Kyoto. The seats were filled to capacity in no time, and there were even people standing.

At 5:30 p.m., the event started. The program started with "SHIBUYA COFFEE TALK. Moderated by Hitoshi Odabe, an editor and writer, the guests were Wataru Kakubari, representative of the indie label "Kakubarhythm," and photographer Taro Hirano. The two are good friends, and Hirano often takes photos of Kakubarhythm artists.
The talk started with the topic of their respective relationships, followed by coffee tasting. The two coffees that were served were the two coffees actually sold in the store. One was a single origin coffee made with beans from Papua New Guinea, and the other was a blend.
Oh, it's delicious! This single origin is refreshing. It is fruity and astringent, and I think it will taste good even when it is cold.
I just had this blended coffee backstage, and it's delicious, too. One of the features of this store is that they roast the beans in the store and actually brew the coffee in front of you with the beans.
As Odabe-san says, there is a large roasting machine in the store, and the green beans that come in are roasted here every day.
I saw the machine in action, and it makes a great sound. It might give you a different taste if you drink coffee while listening to the sound.
After the tasting, the talk shifted to topics related to the coffee we usually drink. The following is a detailed report of the talk.
Kakubari: Recently, I was asked to recommend a coffee shop for a magazine, and I wrote about a French roast from a certain supermarket that I drink at Hirano's house. It's really just an ordinary coffee, but when I drink it at Taro's house, it tastes so good that I always ask him, "Where does this come from? I always ask him where it's from. Do you brew it in a special way?
Hirano: I didn't do anything special (laughs).
Odabe: You have published various photo collections on the theme of American culture, haven't you, Hirano-san? I think you have a deep connection with the American coffee culture.
Hirano: I couldn't drink coffee until I was in my early twenties, and the bitterness made me sick. I became able to drink coffee when I went to the U.S. for an interview, and it was at a 50's diner, which is what everyone thinks of when they think of coffee. A lady in a mini-skirt poured coffee into a thick mug with a clear glass pot. I guess this is what is called "first wave" coffee. It was so thin that you could see the bottom of the cup. After drinking it, I learned to drink.
Odabe: It's almost like hot water.
Hirano: Like hot barley tea. The crispy coffee goes well with bacon, hash browns, and pancakes. That was the beginning, and I gradually became able to drink stronger and stronger.
Kakubari: The other day, I went to Kiseru's Goubun's house for an arcade photo shoot. He brewed coffee for me, and it was delicious. There is a scene in Kiseru's PV where Tomoharu makes the coffee. Coffee brewed by Kiseru sounds delicious, doesn't it?
Odabe: Just the image alone sounds delicious. But the coffee we drink at the Kakubarizumu office is also delicious. Are you particular about something?
Kakubari: That was Brendi. I simply like Tomoyo Harada, so as long as she's in a commercial, I'll always say "Brendy" (laughs).
Odabe: I like a movie called "Coffee & Cigarettes.
Plain: I like the scene where Bill Murray drinks a pot of first wave coffee straight from the pot.
Kakubari: Speaking of movies, in "Reality Bites," Ethan Hawke says, "All I need is a cup of coffee and a box of Camels. Didn't you think, "That's so cool! Sorry, that's all (laughs).
Odabe: Are there any other films, music, or photographs related to coffee that come to mind?
Kakubari: It's not a work of art, but Haruomi Hosono is a coffee lover. Whenever I visit him, he makes me a cup of delicious coffee, and since I have never had espresso, it was a new experience for me. Since then, my desire for good coffee has increased. Simply wanting to drink coffee is one thing, but wanting to drink good coffee is another.
Odabe: I understand. I understand. Do you have any expectations for Roasted Coffee in the future?
Kakubari: We have a huge roastery here, Wi-Fi, and delicious single origin and blended coffees from Papua New Guinea, and I'm sure everyone here today wants to come back.
Hirano: I'm sure they are also thinking, "I can't wait for Kiseru to get out" (laughs).
All: Laughter
Kakubari: Incidentally, Kiseru is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year and will be playing a live concert at Hibiya Open-Air Concert Hall on September 16. There are long-established stores in Kyoto that have been in business for hundreds of years, and I hope Kiseru will be one of them. I would like to see Kiseru become a family business (laughs).
Hirano: Like the second and third generation.
Kakubari: "3rd generation Kiseru" is interesting (laughs). Kakubari: "Yo! 3rd generation! I can hear people calling out, "Yo!
Hirano: Like doing amazing dances.
Kakubari:We will do that when we become the third generation. The fans who are here now will be 90 years old, and we can tell them, "This is what the first generation was like" (laughs).
Odabe: It would be great if that really happens. Do you have any announcements, Hirano-san?
Hirano: I will be releasing a small photo book in May, so please take a look at it if you like.
Kakubari: All of Taro's photographs are good, so please check out his past works. He also runs a gallery called "NO.12 GALLERY" in Uehara, Shibuya-ku, so please check that out as well. Also, Odabe-kun writes various articles as a writer, and he also writes for Kakubarizumu's Rock Gaho.
Odabe: Thank you very much for introducing me. Now that we have finished the talk, we are going to the live performance of Kiseru, which you have all been waiting for. Please enjoy the show.
After a short break, Kiseru appeared on stage. The two, who had been listening to the talk in the back of the restaurant, first enlivened the restaurant with their MC, jokingly saying, "Good evening, I am the first Kissel. While we were waiting, we had coffee and hot dogs, which were very tasty," he said, praising the Roasted Coffee menu. The live performance started with the song "I only changed one thing" to coincide with the store's renewal. Kiseru's signature mellow and calm performance and singing created a peaceful atmosphere right from the start of the show.
After the first song, they performed "Name of the Night," which had a different arrangement than before. After the MC, the live ended with "Once Good Night," a new song "To the Shadow of the Leaves," "Sora no Ue," "Vega," and "Haru" as an encore. The close proximity between the stage and the audience allowed the audience to appreciate the two performers up close and personal. Fans could not have had a more luxurious opportunity. We are also happy to report that Kiseru's pleasant, floating music had the effect of making us forget our everyday lives, creating a pleasant, dreamlike time.
And so the event came to an end. Roasted Coffee Laboratory is an unusual business that has a roastery inside the store, and it appears that new initiatives, such as the sale of collaborative sweets, will continue to be undertaken. Of course, the coffee made from fresh, home-roasted beans is also a highlight of the store, so if you have not yet visited the store, we recommend that you go there soon for a cup of coffee.
