As the first phase of the project, the world's first exhibition of the visionary jewelry brand "Toshikane Jewelry" (a.k.a. Toshikane), "Supercraft - Supercraft Beyond the Limits. A Microcosm of Intricate Microart" will be held from July 7 (Sun.).
Arita, Saga Prefecture, is known for its 400-year tradition of porcelain, Arita-yaki porcelain. Toshikane was founded in 1931 by Shunichi Kojima, a porcelain maker based in Arita, and his painter, Kenzo Minami, who produced obi-dome (sash clasp).
After the war, the company shifted to the production of accessories for the Occupation Forces. The oriental designs were well received by Westerners, and at one time, orders for tens of thousands of pieces per year were received, but exports to the United States completely stopped in 1985 due to the global economy. Soon after, they disappeared from the market. In recent years, ceramic jewelry made by "Toshikane," a "phantom jewelry" company, has become so popular among overseas collectors that a one-yen coin-sized piece fetches as much as tens of thousands of yen.
The elaborate workmanship that one would not expect from porcelain, the vivid colors that are impossible to reproduce, and the universal design with oriental motifs .
