Photographer , photographer , photographer . That's what we would call him by his profession, but it would be better to sit him down as an expressionist rather than that. I am talking about Yusuke Yamatani.
HOUYHNHNM's often follows in his expressive footsteps!will provide an update on the latest developments.
Have you heard about "Doors," a performing art project that Yamatani started last year? Simply put, the shutter is released every time a drum is played, resulting in a self-portrait work that combines photography and live performance.
Numerous photos scattered on the floor after the Performas .
The expression of the devilish Yamaya. The heat and madness that can be seen when they are lined up.
Yamatani plans to tour Europe this fall with this unprecedented performance. Yamatani is currently raising funds through a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter.
The artist's own thoughts on this project areThis page. HOUYHNHNM's would like to post the comments of support from creators in various fields that were received by Yamatani.

I like your photos, Mr. Yamatani.

"August 2, 2007, Shibuya WWW Beta , the shutter of light and sound that Yusuke Yamatani cuts out will ring out. Witness a dazzling night ."
Naoto Okutomi (BOY)
I sense in you, Yamatani, a vigor more akin to that of a news photographer than a fashion photographer. He seems to step on landmines in order to get close. He captures the physicality, the sweat, the movement, and at the same time, the quiet, silent moments. . A photographer who plays the drums, and then goes on tour in Europe. Do whatever you want, go on a crazy trip, and show us your impulses again in a different kind of photography.

Yusuke Yamatani always gives us a good time with his photography...works...etc! Have a good day.

. there was always a photographer who came without being asked. He always made his own arrangements. Yusuke Yamaya, who is synonymous with D.I.Y., asked me to do it. . He said he was going to Europe this time to play drums and take pictures. Whether he succeeds or fails, it will be interesting, so I felt I had no choice but to support him.

Yamatani-kun, though, is giving form to one strange idea after another,
When I first heard about the Doors idea, I thought it would indeed be a losing battle.
However, I was surprised when I saw Doors for the first time.
. it was like having a picture burned directly into my retina.
So much for seeing it in your mind, Yamaya-kun.
I remember when Yamatani and I traveled by car from New York to Memphis.
Every night we played cards with only two beds at stake, and Yamatani-kun won almost all of them.
Yamatani must see the odds against him on this trip to Europe as well.

Kyoto is the Konkai Komyoji temple.Amitabha's Pure Land (composed of five kalpa images)Whenever I see Yusuke Yamatani's magnificent Afro hair, which is reminiscent of the "Kabuki" series, I wonder if each strand of hair is actually functioning as an antennae. I wonder if each strand of his hair actually functions as an antennae. That is how tactile his photographs are. Not only in his early works, Tsugi no yoru e, but also in ground and Into the light, the rough contact that occurs between the photographed object and him is burned into the image. The latest work, Doors, was a symbolic experience of this. When Yamatani played the drums in the dark, a flash of light was emitted, and for a brief moment, his image emerged in white and was seared into the viewer's eyes. This is "photography. Or, to put it structurally, it can be called a modern version of automatism that makes full use of technology. He needs the presence of the spectator (the subject) to create a "seeing/being seen" relationship, and the sense of touch to hold both parties together. . The role of the afro is to serve as the antennae of the audience. If you have ever seen a performance by Doors, please recall that the flashes of light that make Yamaya's figure appear white are the same as the flashes of light that make him appear white. If you have seen Doors' performance, remember that when a flash of light makes Yamaya's figure emerge in white, it is his shiny black Afro that sticks in your mind the most. His hair, chaotically spreading out in all directions, is like Kitaro's hair when he senses a sense of yokiness, or as if to say, "E.T. Ouchi denwa," as each strand of his hair reaches out toward us. No matter what angle we try to worship them from, they spread out in all directions, making it impossible to escape. It is just like the web of a demon spider nestled in hell. Perhaps it is because of this background that we are unknowingly captivated by his photographs. He is a man who was born to be a photographer. I am jealous of Yamatani.

Yamatani, who made his impressive debut in 2014 with the "Tsugi no yoru e" solo exhibition, has actually been a friend of ours since the gallery's inception. After visiting the gallery to see the exhibition, Yamatani often brought me zines that he had created himself, and I used to love flipping through them during my breaks from work. Yamatani is more like an ally of the gallery and the artist, and I have always respected and looked forward to his free expression that is not bound by conventional boundaries. Doors" is a work that expresses the artist himself, and is interesting not only for its performance, but also for the entire process from the conception of the special equipment to the simultaneous printing out of the mountains and valleys that proliferate during the performance, and then to the creation of the photo book. For this European tour, fundraising has been added to the process of the work, and I hope that many more people will participate and enjoy it. I sincerely wish you success.

Yamatani is a drummer.
Junk drummer
If Yamatani hits it, it'll create a storm.
You gotta play the drums all year round.
Printer's smoking, too.

. Yamaya does not consider a fashion shoot to be a work of art.
I like the grace of it. Yes, I do. If you show me a work like this .
Doors makes you feel as if you, the audience, are a part of the black-and-white photo.
And that elation you feel when you see something you've never seen before.
. Yamaya and I traveled to many places together.
A room in a secret apartment complex , outside of Russia, where I went by boat. A seedy bar in Hirosaki . The cheeky dance of bikers in Tulsa.
. Travel is always accompanied by chance happenings and encounters.
I am sure something bizarre will happen in Europe with that drum performance.
I like it. I think I'll go to Europe, too.
Tatsuya Shimada / Stylist
. I first met Mr. Yamatani at the home of a mutual friend, filmmaker Yusuke Ishida.
I was there when Yamatani, who shot the stills for Ishida's short film, was selecting photos with the director himself, and when the selection process was at a standstill, he said to me, "The only way to choose photos is to look at them," which remains a strong memory.
In just one word, I could feel Yamatani's passion for photography as he dives into the simple yet profound question of "what is taking pictures" and "what is photography?
. Since then, I, too, have made it a point to listen to music first.
Thank you , Yamatani.
Kohhei Matsuda(BO NINGEN)
I am a printer, and when Mr. Yamatani first came to Inyunik, he was an old man with an afro and a beard. . He had no money and was not very good at adjusting the tone curve to create the printing data. But when he showed me a photo of "Tsugi no yoru e," I remember feeling a sense of mission to get it out there. From that point on, I became an obedient printer who was prepared to make a loss and do whatever I asked. Then came "ground," "RAMA LAMA DING DONG," "contact high zine," and "Into the Light. . I continue to be shown completely new forms of photographic expression. This time, "doors" is the most punky. He is trying to break new ground in photography.
Takashi Yamazumi ( Inyunik )
The first time I met Ms. Yamatani was at a photobook fair in Omotesando, Tokyo.
. it is more correct to say that we met, but I recognized it unilaterally.
While I was wandering around alone without any acquaintances, I noticed a "ground". The cover of a dirty club floor.
Just as the artist is in the gallery, Mr. Yamatani, with his exaggerated haircut, is talking to him like a grocer.
I recall feeling a gap between the way he was signing thin, clean letters with a pencil in a familiar hand.
. From there, I have been blessed with a relationship that has taught me many things. Photography and technology, of course, but that's not all. It is precisely when I am feeling a little insecure about something that I call them. I am always tempted to take advantage of the fact that they will probably say, "Let's go out for a beer or something.
At first, when I heard about his drum performance, I knew he was a guy who could go as far as he wanted to go without losing his cool. . I remember thinking, "This is a guy who can go anywhere as cool as he is.
I want you to show off your drums and strobe flashes as much as you want in Europe, and ( deliver!
Yoko Kusano / Photographer
I thought he was crazy.
I thought I knew...
A strobe cuts through the darkness, and a beat with a strange perspective can be heard beyond it.
When you beat the drum, the camera shutter is triggered , and the subject is you!
When he first told me about the idea, all I could think was that he was as crazy as ever.
My impression changed. The actual drum performance was a space of intense energy.
Something akin to fear passed through me, and I just stood there.
Yamaya's face, face, face spit out from the printer... I picked up one of them and his eyes in the reflection were so clear!
I was kind of happy.
I'm rocking it, Yama-chan, go ahead and slam it down, I bet the Europeans will say this too.
"He's the craziest rocker I've ever seen."
I assure you.
Kai Teshima(NEIGHBORS)
I hope you can make it.

. I think we have more than adequately conveyed what kind of a writer Yusuke Yamatani is, and what kind of a person he is before that.
In addition, prior to this European tour, the final Japan performance before "Doors" travels to Europe has been hastily scheduled at WWWβ, the birthplace of Yamatani's signature abstract work "ground".
Guests include Yosuke Yukimatsu, the icon and genius from Osaka, RIKI HIDAKA, who is not only a soloist but also a guitarist for GOD, YELLOWUHURU, who presides over BODY ODD and FLATTOP, and the legendary MOODMAN, who will perform a HARD CORE SET. The lineup is as follows.
By the way, this crowdfunding campaign will run until August 14, ( Wed ) , "All-or-nothing." format. As the name implies, this means that unless the project reaches its target amount, the backer of the project will not be billed in any way, and the creator will not be funded.
Yusuke Yamatani is an expressionist who puts himself on the line in his creations. If you find something that moves you, even a little, please try to turn your feelings into action.

Yusuke Yamatani
His first solo exhibition was in 2013 with "Tsugi no yoru e," a series of straightforward black-and-white photographs capturing the ephemeral nature of youth culture. Since then, he has developed works on a variety of themes, including live music club floors, his honeymoon, late-night residential areas, and self-portraits, presenting a unique vision of the state of the world around people today. While remaining true to the place where he stands and the reality that exists in front of him, his activities have a structure that conceptually traces the logic of the photographic medium within society and explores the possibilities of new photographic expression. His activities are not limited to his own works, but also include fashion photography and album jackets for musicians such as Ken Hirai, Yonezu Genji, Suchmos, Radwinsp, King Gnu, YuruFuwa Gang, and Comai. TP14T, "Lianzhou Foto 2016," ( Lianzhou, China, 2016 ), "KYOTOGRAPHIE," ( Mumeisha, Kyoto, 2015 ), "Four From Japan," ( Condé Nast, New York, 2015 1TP 14T, "Tokyo International Photography Festival" (2015 ), etc. . His photography books include "RAMA LAMA DING DONG," ( Gallery Yamaya, ), 2015, and "Into the Light," (T&M Projects, ), 2017 .
