Graffiti is said to have originated in New York City in the 1970s, when unknown artists painted and wrote on subway yards and trains. Later, with the advent of Keith Haring and Basquiat, graffiti was transformed from graffiti to art.
Futura , one of the leading figures in this transitional period. While lettering had been the norm in graffiti up until then, he introduced the abstract style to the world. His skills and techniques were revolutionary for the time and won him much acclaim.
His work was later collected by museums around the world, and he has collaborated with numerous maisons, including Louis Vuitton, Comme des Garcons, and Chanel.
And on November 16 (Sat.), Futura's solo exhibition will begin. This is the first time in about 20 years that Futura has held an exhibition in Japan.
The exhibition will feature four different sculptures and 27 commissioned works created during his residency in Japan. Also on display will be the work of his son, photographer Timothy McGarr , known as 13th Witness.
. graffiti was my way of confirming my existence. I wanted to make my name known all over the world . I wanted to make a name for myself. I just had to keep creating without giving up. Never stop, just keep creating.
As Futura says, his creative spirit has not waned even though he is over 60 years old, and he continues to face his art with stoicism.
