On February 1 of this year, the United Kingdom left the European Union. Immediately after Brexit, a new type of coronavirus struck the country. The number of deaths continues to rise, and if the situation continues at this rate, it is said that it may overtake Italy. What concerned me in this context was London, the center of pop culture.Paris, as previously reported.Likewise, the city is on lockdown, but the details of the situation are not being conveyed to us. We asked Tatsuo Hino, a local fashion consultant, editor, and blogger for Huinamu, to report on the situation. Surprisingly, he told us that various new media and social initiatives have been launched. We have a glimpse of what people are looking for in this state of emergency.
"STAY HOME, STAY CREATIVE" The creative mind of the Corona Disaster.
Several weeks have passed since the British government declared a lockdown on March 23. As of April 19, the effects of the policy to minimize the peak of infection by consciously restricting people's contact with others and maintaining social distance are gradually being felt. Going out is allowed only for grocery shopping, hospital visits, exercise such as jogging, and commuting to work when one cannot work at home. When going out, social distance is applied and meeting with family and friends who do not share the same residence (gatherings of two or more people) is prohibited, and the rule is basically to stay in the vicinity of the home. Going out without a valid reason can result in a fine by the police.
Meanwhile, a special press conference of the government's official residence is televised on "BBC" at 5:00 p.m. daily, where the current situation and outlook are announced. According to the estimates of "Imperial College London," a well-known authority on epidemiology, the number of infected people is expected to reach 500,000 without government intervention (if nothing is done), and as of the end of March, it was reported that it would be good if the number of deaths could be kept under 20,000 by strict policy.
A letter sent home from the Prime Minister's Office explaining the need for the curfew example. It is believed to have been mailed to all households.
The United Kingdom has a "National Health Service (NHS). Many of you may be familiar with the phrase "from cradle to grave," a slogan of the social security policy of the current opposition Labour Party, one of the two major political parties in the United Kingdom after World War II, which provides free medical services to the entire population. However, due to years of austerity fueled by the economy, there is currently not enough capacity to deal with such an emergency situation.
The British government did not have enough beds to deal with corona-infected patients, so they turned the Excel Center, a large business conference center facility, into the NHS Nightingale Hospital, an emergency hospital with an intensive care unit (ICU) that can accommodate up to 4,000 patients. 200 troops were dispatched per day and construction was completed in nine days. The hospital was put into operation on April 3. It was then that many citizens realized for the first time the magnitude of this unprecedented situation.
As of today, the number of infected people is just over 120,000 and the number of deaths is just over 16,000; the death toll at the end of March was about 2,000, which shows how fast the coronas are spreading. Stores other than supermarkets, grocery stores, pharmacies, and off-licenses that provide essential services are closed, as are 40 subway stations that do not serve more than two lines, as are buses, which are being thinned out. London's transportation system remains at a minimum as a means of transportation for doctors, nurses, food workers, logistics/distribution workers, and cleaners who work for the "NHS," who fall into the category of key workers, and for teachers who teach there, with some schools open to accommodate their children. This is one of the few means of transportation that remains. This is the general social trend.
For what it's really like, if you go out once a day, you basically only see people going shopping or performing excesions or delivery companies. At the beginning of the lockdown, there was extreme panic and food and toilet paper were missing from supermarket shelves, but now things are slowly returning to normal. However, there are still partially empty shelves. All supermarkets are giving priority to seniors 70 years and older for the first hour of opening, and many grocery stores and food purveyors are voluntarily showing their appreciation and respect by offering special discounts to "NHS" staff who support medical care.
To enter a pharmacy or supermarket, one must first wait in line in front of the entrance. While waiting, maintain a distance of 2 meters from the person in front or behind you (there is tape on the ground at 2 meter intervals). When one shopper leaves the store, one enters the store.
Supermarket shopping rules. (1) Only one adult from one household is allowed in the store. (2) Payment by card. (3) If you are not in good physical condition, you will be refused entry into the store. (4) 2-meter spacing must be maintained inside the store.
Shopping rules for private delis. (1) Three customers in the store at all times. (2) Only one adult from each household is allowed in the store. (3) Use the disinfectant next to the entrance before entering the store. (4) Credit card payment only. (5) Only items to be purchased may be touched. (6) Keep a distance of 2 meters along the red tape inside the store.
There have been reports of a temporary contraction in the UK GDP by 15 percent. Compensation for companies that are unable to operate due to the curfew and are forced to lay off employees, retail and restaurants, has been announced, including an unsecured loan program for small businesses and business tax exemptions. In order to keep employees together, the government will compensate employers for 80% of their employees' salaries (subject to various conditions) for the four-month period from March 1 to June 30, in order to help the economy recover quickly after Corona. Self-employed and freelance workers are initially excluded. Self-employed and freelance workers were initially excluded from the program, but are now covered by the same system.
The announcement of this program and the speed with which the decision was made was rapid. Simply put, employees will be temporarily laid off and rehired at the end of June, and those who receive the recommendation will not be allowed to work during that time. In other words, they are not allowed to work. The increasing number of young people who are jogging and exercising every day during the daytime may be due to the fact that many companies are adapting this scheme.
Warnings to joggers posted in the park. (1) Pass on the left. (2) 2-meter social distance. (3) No jogging in groups. (4) No overtaking by force. (5) No spitting. (6) Greater consideration for others.
At a government press conference on April 16, it was announced that the lockdown would be extended for at least three weeks. While it is easy to fall into negative thinking about the prolonged period, there are social and online efforts to encourage each other to creatively navigate through this situation. The "Corona Crisis" may be a lesson to humanity. It is a pandemic that threatens every human being, regardless of nationality, race, or religion, and has unfortunately resulted in a decline in international cooperation and conflict between major powers, making the international problems caused by populist politics more pronounced. On the other hand, the social distance has made us more intimate than ever with the lack of communication with people other than ourselves.
Every Thursday at 8pm, the public applauds at the eaves of their homes in honor of the "NHS" staff who support the country in life and death. They keep in touch with neighbors and friends, encourage and help each other, buy food and leave it gently at the eaves of their homes. Parents juggling home schooling and teleworking for their children by closing schools. Retired former "NHS" doctors and nurses returning to the field as volunteers, and university students aspiring to study medicine volunteering to help out in the medical field before they start their careers. And the gratitude that each individual wants to convey to the key workers who are running the great city of London in this unprecedented situation. It is precisely because we have promoted innovation and educated ourselves too much about the urban lifestyle that entrepreneurs have built, we have forgotten the importance of community that should be rooted in our daily lives. Ironically, it is most needed now.
TEDTalks."In an interview uploaded to the "The Money Will Eventually Come Back, But Those Who Have Died Will Not", Bill Gates commented in response to a question about the future of the economy. Consideration for people = social distance. That may be the shortcut to overcome the corona.
