Hasami Town, Nagasaki Prefecture, is one of Japan's leading ceramic production centers. Also in HOUYHNHNMHasami Ware NewsAs we have mentioned many times in the past, the "KAITEKI" brand has strong ties to the cultural world, and many fun products are created based on free ideas.

Nakazen, which has been based in Hasami-cho since its establishment in 1917, has been making pottery with its roots in this area, and has been making efforts to produce vessels while inheriting the techniques and spirit of Hasami-yaki pottery. The brand director is Kuntaro Abe, who has directed numerous brands and is known as one of Japan's leading ceramic designers.

The concept is "a variety of personalities to meet diverse tastes. As the first product, "Curry Plate" supervised by Yuhi Komiyama (, musician ), and Hanako Tsurezure (, food editor ), will be released.

Our goal was to create the "ultimate curry dish. We designed a plate that makes curry and rice at home the perfect feast, and makes both serving and eating fun. The appeal of curry is that it can be made easily with roux or in earnest with spices, but since you made the curry yourself, you want to serve it in the most delicious way possible. Nakazen" celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2017, and on this occasion, they started to launch "Zento" in order to pass on the pottery techniques of the Hizen area (including Hasami and Arita) and its potential to the next generation.

The brand name "Zento" was chosen because of the two positive letters "mae" and "zen" in both "Hizen" and "Nakazen" and the sound of the word "zento". The brand name "Zento" was chosen because of the positive connotations of the words "Mae" and "Zen" in both "Hizen" and "Chuzen.

During my trip to India, I came across a traditional Jaipur pottery called "Blue Potteries". I loved the beautiful colors, including blue, and the rough lines and coloring, all hand-painted and somewhat protruding, and bought several platters to take home. Although they have a flamboyant pattern, they go surprisingly well with anything you serve on them, and are very festive. They are especially perfect for serving several kinds of curry. So this time, we asked him to recreate the essence of this dish in Hasamiyaki porcelain. Turmeric flowers, curry leaves, bay leaves, and sage flowers decorate the edges. This motif was inspired by the ingredients used in Ayurveda and curry that we came across in Sri Lanka. It is fun just to look at it, and I think it is a perfect plate for serving curry or fruit. The bright future ahead for "Zento" is not limited to collaborations with these two. The company plans to release a series of models in collaboration with a total of 15 creators by the end of this year. The theme for all of them is "curry plates. This is a very popular yet profound theme, and it's already very cool, isn't it? Let's wait with great anticipation.
