Daido Moriyama is one of Japan's leading photographers. His work has a strength that seems to plumb the depths of his subjects, and even in an age when the medium of photography has become instantaneous, it still radiates a presence that overwhelms the viewer. The atmosphere and power of his work are unique. With a documentary film scheduled for release next spring, his activities are once again attracting attention.
Such installations by Daido Moriyama are currently being held at the COMME des GARCONS Aoyama store, the Trading Museum COMME des GARCONS Tokyo Midtown store, and Dover Street Market GINZA.
The highlight of the exhibition is a total of 109 photographs, all selected by Rei Kawakubo. The Aoyama store displays cuts from the "Daido Tokyo" photo book, the Tokyo Midtown store displays cuts from the "MORIYAMA DAIDO'S TOKYO ONGOING" exhibition catalog, and "Dover Street Market GINZA" displays cuts from the "PLASTIC LOVE", a collection of photographs of mannequins, is on display at Dover Street Market Ginza.
The Aoyama and Tokyo Midtown stores, in particular, have white walls with works of various sizes, giving them the feel of an art gallery in addition to being stores. Kawakubo himself boldly laid out the photos to match the space without altering the photos themselves, creating something different from ordinary photo exhibitions.
In addition, two limited edition T-shirts are available to coincide with this installation. This special version is a cleverly edited version of Moriyama's work.
This project was made possible by Rei Kawakubo's resonance with and respect for Moriyama's attitude. It may be a good idea to take this unique opportunity to visit the three stores.
