Namahage" is a world-class tradition in Akita Prefecture, where Oga is proud to be a part of it. It is also a way for children to learn the lesson that if they do not listen to their parents, they will face a scary situation, and also to get rid of evil spirits in the house.
The film, "Crying is a Thing" is an original work , inspired by such a messenger of God, Namahage. Up-and-coming director Kaima Sato took the megaphone and fell in love with the script, and director Hirokazu Kore-eda participated in the planning of the film, which took five years to complete.
~Story ~.
Oga City, Akita Prefecture . Tasuku (Taga Nakano), a young man born and raised in a small port town, has a daughter but lacks a sense of responsibility as a father. On New Year's Eve, while going around town as a "namahage" (a bald head), Tasuku makes a big mistake in a moment of distraction. Two years later, he is in Tokyo . After his divorce, he has pushed himself into a corner and returns to his hometown, thinking that he has done his purification work. Can he regain what he gave up for himself?
Taiga Nakano played the role of Tasuku, a clumsy protagonist who makes an irrevocable mistake but is determined to move forward. The film faithfully depicts Tasuku's wavering emotions as they are gradually revealed.
His wife, Kine, is Riho Yoshioka. Riho Yoshioka expresses her resentment toward her husband not in words, but in her silence, revealing a glimpse of her newfound talent. The veteran cast also includes Kanichiro as Shinami's best friend, Kimiko Yo as Setsuko, Tasuku's mother, Toshiro Yanagiba as Natsui, the president of the "Namahage Survival Association," and Takashi Yamanaka as Yuma, Tasuku's older brother.
The music in the film was composed by Yuta Orisaka, whose graceful voice is sure to move you. The stills for this film were taken by Ms. Yoko Kusano. Her photographs, with their softness and sadness, add depth to the film.
What is even more noteworthy is the "wait-and-see" approach in the direction of the film. The long cuts of the time the main characters spend in the film seem to trace their emotions. The audience's hearts will be tightened.
After three years of repentance, he welcomed the first New Year's Eve in his hometown. What is the action taken by Tasuku when he learns of Kikane's remarriage and his daughter's growth? The work questions the budding responsibility of a parent and what morality really is.
The public opening is Friday, November 20.
