Blue luminous proof of existence that shines light on things that have lost their significance. An exhibition by a young contemporary artist is currently being held in Ginza.

I looked up and saw the occasional blank white ad board above my head.

Contemporary artist and photographer Hanako Kimura captures objects that seem to have lost their significance through her viewfinder and transforms them into Thomason-like works. An exhibition of her representative work "SIGNS FOR [ ]" is being held at Sony Imaging Gallery Ginza.

"SIGNS FOR [ ]" is a series of blue-glowing works combining neon lights with photographs of an empty Kara signboard and a cloudless blue sky printed on acrylic plates.

After winning the Grand Prix at UNKNOWN ASIA 2018, he has exhibited in Osaka, Taiwan, and China, and this second exhibition in Tokyo will feature 12 dynamic large works printed on 84cm x 120cm.

The six rules she imposed on herself in creating this work are as follows.

1. No digital processing such as compositing or erasing. (Slight correction of brightness, etc. is allowed.)
2. Do not capture clouds.
3. If the words "Advertisement Wanted" are found, it is NG.
4. The text on the building other than the signboard area should also be avoided as much as possible.
5. Only take pictures in situations where the background of the billboard is the sky.
6. I don't leave the house just to go out of my way to look for an empty sign.

Her message, "Everything exists even if it has no reason to exist," is clearly visualized by illuminating it with neon lights.

The more you think about it, the more depth you will find in these works.

While working as a commercial photographer for advertisements and magazines, he began creating works as his lifework around 2011. He has been developing conceptual works, focusing on touching the vast gray zone that lies between the two extremes of "existence/non-existence" and other phenomena. In recent years, he has not limited himself to photographic expression, but has also created three-dimensional works, collages, drawings, and installations.
