The artist Yoshiyuki Okuyama, who has continued his delicate and fearless expressive activities, has created a dialogue with his late grandmother through the medium of flowers in his latest work, "flowers", released in May 2021.
This series, which Okuyama has been photographing for many years, was shot in the house where his grandmother lived.
This place, where various thoughts must have crossed and passed through, is now Okuyama's studio. As the title suggests, the motif of this work is a flower, but it is not the only thing that is captured in this work.
. Even if you have only seen some of the photographs presented in this section, you may have felt something, even if only dimly. Why do these photos strike a chord with an unspecified number of people, despite the fact that they were created from an extremely personal standpoint?
What is the power that makes people think that I know this landscape, this light, this tone? In this work, there is a world that could be called a kind of original landscape, which probably resides in the hearts of many people.
The flowers in this work were provided by Emi Shinozaki of flower creator "edenworks" , and were supposed to be discarded.
. These were taken using a small film called 110 film (one-ten film), which was used by Okuyama's grandfather in the 1980s.
The photographs of kitchens, studies, bedrooms, and other spaces that are woven into these images use a variety of cameras, including large format contact sheets, medium format cameras, 35mm, and Polaroid.
You will surely be able to feel the gradation of several time frames fused together in a single book. Please take a look through the book.
To celebrate the publication of the book, an online talk event with Yoshiyuki Okuyama and Takahiro Ito, curator of the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, will be held on Saturday, July 31, from 20:00 at Ginza Tsutaya. Please join us for this event as well.
