Clothes are for wearing. Yutaro Ishikawa is an artist who seeks out new possibilities for clothing, free from such conventional wisdom.
While working as a business consultant, she has attended "coconogacco" hosted by Yoshikazu Yamagata of "writtenafterwards" since 2018 to study fashion and art, a unique background.
He will exhibit and sell the objects he created during the ongoing self-restraint of the Corona disaster at "flotsam books".
Ishikawa creates objects by hardening shirts and socks with wax. He says that there was a trigger that led him to this style of work.
The impetus for this production was the purchase of his own old clothes from a friend who lives abroad amidst the ongoing self-restraint of the 2020 Corona disaster. When I opened the cardboard box that arrived from overseas, I smelled the perfume he usually wears and the cigarettes he smokes. When I smelled them, I was reminded of all the times I spent with him, such as the taste of coffee we drank together, the music we listened to in the car together, the view from his house, etc., and I felt very nostalgic.
This experience made him realize that clothing has an interesting quality that not only wears but also soaks up the unique smell of the wearer, and he began to think about ways to express clothing and smells. Taking a hint from the fact that aroma candles trap the scent in the wax itself, he repeated experiments to see if it would be possible to keep the scent in the clothes semi-permanently by soaking them in the scented wax.
The "flotsam books" exhibit features works that focus on clothing and smell. Unlike ordinary paintings or sculptures, one of the best parts of the exhibition is enjoying the fragrance. So, please visit the exhibition and recall the memories of when you were locked in the works of art.
The exhibition will be held from Thursday, February 10 to Sunday, February 20.
