Stylist Masaaki Ida proposes "MHL. clothes that elevate the everyday" vol.3

MHL., which produces sophisticated and timeless collections based on the essence of military and work, was launched in 2003 as the casual line of MARGARET HOWELL. For the third installment, we invite stylist Masaaki Ida to introduce iconic, everyday styles, mixing his personal outfits with key items he recommends. In the third installment, we will take a look at outerwear and knitwear that will be your immediate choice for the coming winter season.

A light outerwear that coexists with both work and outdoor wear, making it the star of your coordination. The bold hip pockets create a light and casual look, while the chic wool lining creates a perfect balance.

The outer fabric is made of warp cotton and weft nylon, and its crisp look gives a tough and clean impression. After being washed and rubbed during the dyeing process, the fabric is further subjected to a special tumbler drying process to create a unique textured unevenness and fleshiness. The cotton-like texture makes it a natural match for knits and slacks. This is an easy-to-use outerwear that Mr. Ida describes as "a work outerwear companion in my sense," but this time he has shifted to a more traditional style!

The wool lining is subtly elegant against the cotton-like outer fabric, so I wanted to create a work-style look with a traditional element by taking advantage of the MHL. atmosphere. Inspired by vintage knitwear, the design uses a knitted fabric called "single-bed sole" as the reverse side to create a thin ribbed look. The elegant crew-neck detail and boxy fit with dropped shoulders add a moderately relaxed feel. The attractive colors produced by the English yarns, which bring out the natural texture of Shetland wool, give the knit a characterful look even as a single piece. If Ida-san were to style this clean and simple knit, she would brush it up with the use of casual accessories.

The knitted look with distinct ridges has so much presence that the style is complete just with this. I decided to make the most of the color of the knit while adding a fashionable element to give it a cozy look. I kept the look mode-like with a white shirt, wide slacks, and sneakers, while adding accents with a scarf and half-finger gloves. Taking a vintage work jacket and painted pants as its design source, this heavy corduroy set-up has a neat look that is a fusion of classic and modern. The corduroy is made by a long-established supplier that has been ordering from the beginning of the brand. The quality of the material, backed by history, and the beautiful finish of the thick ridges are very special and hard to find even in Japan. The navy corduroy set-up is very elegant and so easy to use that you can style it with just a white T. It has a work feel to it, so it can also be worn casually. Even though it is winter, I didn't want to give a heavy impression, so I dared to include sporty items, which is a different genre. With a white big hoodie, basketball sneakers, an outdoor-style hat, and a bag, I tried to balance the overall look by keeping a sense of escape in mind."

This duffle coat features impactful details such as large, eye-catching hip pockets and three wooden toggles attached with yellow hemp cord. The knee-length, loose-fitting silhouette matches the current mood and goes great with a variety of items such as cut-and-sew, knitwear, and jerseys.

The fabric is original, created from materials of coat fabrics for the Japanese military stored by a fabric manufacturer in Bishu. The fabric is densely woven of cotton and wool, and is washed and washer-finished to give it a dry, casual texture that is typical of MHL.

The duffle coat has style and elegance. We aimed to incorporate such charm into an everyday style and create a casual styling that anyone can wear.
