While sustainable manufacturing using industrial waste is accelerating in various industries, it is rare to hear of sneakers made from recycled airbags that are scheduled for disposal. One such company that has taken this unusual approach is ASICS, a world-renowned Japanese sports manufacturer.
GEL-SONOMA 15-50 ¥16,500
This work uses unneeded airbags from a major auto parts manufacturer, Toyoda Gosei Co. The reused fabric was prototyped to meet automobile installation standards. The material is both strong and flexible, making it an ideal material for shoes.
The base is the GEL-SONOMA 15-50, a mix of the GEL-SONOMA trail running shoe and the 15-50 cross-country shoe. Red stitching and numbering are designed to represent a bulging airbag at the tongue.
With a light, cushioned midsole and a high-grip outsole, this model can be worn in the outdoor field as well as for city use. The GEL-SONOMA 15-50, with its experimental design and solid functionality, will be available starting January 26 (Thursday).
