Daido Moriyama, one of Japan's most internationally acclaimed photographers, has reinterpreted and rearranged his 2002 book "Shinjuku.
The collage of all the pages of "Shinjuku" was used as material for "Shinjuku (Collage)," a collection of 128 works by Shohei Yoshida, who creates and exhibits his works as an artist while working as an art director and designer of books and catalogs.
Yoshida began creating collage works using Daido Moriyama's photo books as material when he received an offer to create a tabloid poster for the supplemental tabloid poster to the "Special Issue on Photography Made with Daido Moriyama" issue of BRUTUS magazine.
At that time, Yoshida chose "Shinjuku," one of Moriyama's best-known photo books, as the material for his collage, and continued to make it his personal life's work.
The entire book was cut up and dismantled as material, and boldly reconstructed into "Shinjuku ( Collage )," a group of works.
The unique view of the world that differs from the original photograph has received praise from Mr. Moriyama himself.
I've already taken it out of my hands with Yoshida's concept.
I look forward to wandering through the landscape of another Shinjuku ." --Daido Moriyama
This book will be published under the newly launched NUMABOOKS label, a label for books and ideas led by book coordinator and creative director Shintaro Uchinuma.
In conjunction with the release of the book, the first exhibition of Yoshida's work will be held at the "B Gallery" of BEAMS Japan in Shinjuku. Selected works from the 128 pieces in "Shinjuku ( Collage )" will be exhibited and sold. There will also be a talk event next month in which Daido Moriyama will participate.
