This is exactly the world depicted in the film "RODEBOY The Story of Trojan Records," released in July of this year, which depicts how Trojan Records, which began in 1967 as the first British music label dedicated to reggae, resonated not only with many Jamaicans but also with working-class white youth culture. The sixth track, "Thin Line Between Love and Hate," will make you grin. The original was a hit by The Persuaders, a chorus group from the Bronx. But among us Chicano music freaks in Japan, it is also well known as the number sampled by Kid Frost, a hip-hop OG from the barrio, under the title "Thin Line" in 1992. Frost's version is a barrio version with an emotional female chorus and Pachuco's saxophone. Its sweetness and bewitching nature is a taste of honey that has been secretly inherited in those lands. The similarities between the musical tastes of London's Jamaicans and Los Angeles' Chicanos are endlessly fascinating. What is surprising is the strength and flexibility of the culture created by the cross-border community. In 1968, the year Trojan music began, Joe Bataan released "Riot" and "Subway Joe" in New York City. Both of them are very romantic, but we must not forget that there is a kind of politics in them. In a word, they are the "pride" of border-crossers. I have always thought that this is the very reason why this music has been inherited and propagated in the current era. As a Mexican or Chicano growing up in Los Angeles, oldies are deeply rooted into our culture here. Even as a punk & street kid; soul and rocksteady were always apart of our music rotations. Imazato's mix brings me back to a time of my youth where only today mattered. Songs like 'Sitting in the Park' or 'Rudies All Around' take me to a time where the burdens of life didn't weigh down so heavily.
