LE LABO" has been slowly and deliberately increasing its fans around the world under the concept of "slow perfumery.
Over the years, the company has expressed its respect for Japan, as evidenced by the fact that the first store it opened outside the United States was in Daikanyama, Tokyo.
And now, we have opened "LE LABO KYOTO MACHIYA", a store based on a traditional Kyoto machiya.
It has been the brand's dream to open a store in Kyoto since its inception, and this will be the second store in Kyoto after the first lab opened in Kyoto's "Shinpukan" in 2020.
The core of the brand's deep inspiration lies in "wabi and sabi". It goes without saying, therefore, that the brand is a perfect match for Japan and Kyoto.
Le Labo Kyoto Machiya" is a renovated machiya (townhouse) built in 1879 (Meiji 12) that was once a popular sake brewery.
They have carefully and meticulously worked on the project, partnering with local craftsmen to preserve original features and repair with centuries-old materials, from the floors to the walls to the framework.
Two tatami rooms on the second floor offer unique experiences that focus on the core values of the brand.
One is a perfumery room with hundreds of essential oils on display. The other will operate like an open atelier with Japanese artisans and artists as a tribute to traditional Japanese craftsmanship.
In addition, a small café space built behind the heavy wooden doors of the historic warehouse offers coffee, tea, and vegan pastries.
Finally, let me leave you with a few words from Deborah Royer, the brand's Creative Director.
As eternal students of wabi-sabi, we are continually guided by the beauty of the soul that comes from moving slowly, quieting the noise, accepting what is, and allowing room for the unexpected. It is this will that guides us and shapes the emotions we wish to share through the art of slow perfumery.
Kyoto has long been a source of inspiration and a place that embodies our deepest values. Craftsmanship and the ancient lineage of skills passed down through the ages are signposts as we search for how to honor the language of the senses from a broader field of consciousness."
