Japan's world-renowned manga culture has metamorphosed into various forms in recent years by repeatedly adjoining and blending with all kinds of cultures.
In this context, I would like to focus once again on the original manga drawings. It is no exaggeration to say that everything starts here, and the moment when 0 → 1 is born is strongly etched in the original drawings.
Masamune Shirow, a manga artist who continues to exert a great influence on the world, will hold an exhibition of his original works, "The World of Masamune Shirow: "Ghost in the Shell" and the Tracks of Creation," at the Setagaya Literature Museum.
This is a major exhibition that includes first-time exhibits of "Ghost in the Shell," "Appleseed," "Dominion," and more.
Masamune Shirow has been one of the first in the world to express in his manga a future that is becoming more and more electrified, capturing in his unique sense information on advanced technology that had not yet penetrated the world in the 1980s~90s, when the above works were published.
Its innovations continue to have a profound influence on subsequent creators of comics, science fiction literature, and film.
GITS Kodansha
A science fiction work that began to be serialized in "Young Magazine Kaizokuban" magazine published by Kodansha in 1989. The story depicts the battles of "Public Security Section 9 ( Ghost in the Shell )," an offensive organization under the direct control of the prime minister created to prevent crimes that occur in the advanced information society. Three books have been published, including "1," which depicts the fusion of the puppet master and the main character, Motoko Kusanagi. Numerous animations have also been produced, influencing many creators around the world, and a live-action film was made in Hollywood in 2017.
Appleseed Seishinsha
This work was not serialized in a magazine, but was published in 1985 as a completely newly drawn work, and made Shirow Masamune's name a major player. In this science fiction action story, Dunan, a SWAT officer, and Briareos, a full-body cyborg, both living in an abandoned city after World War V, are brought to the three-dimensional city of Olympus, an ideal world, and become involved in various conspiracies that were brewing in the city. The book has been published up to the fourth volume, and animation has been produced in the form of OVA, theater animation, and TV animation.
This exhibition will focus on "Ghost in the Shell," one of his representative works, and will trace his career from his early works "Black Magic" to "Appleseed," "Dominion," "Orion," and up to the present.
Black Magic Seishinsha
First published in February 1983 as a coterie magazine by the manga research group Atlas. It was followed by a collection of Shirow Masamune's early works published as a commercial book by Seishinsha in 1985. The setting of the work is the world of Venusian civilization, where the super-giant computer "Nemesis" is in charge of politics in order to realize a utopia. Several stories are drawn in the form of readings based on the conflict between Tuphon, the youngest daughter created by Nemesis, and Zeus, the head of the regent government. BOOBY TRAP," included in the book, was also made into an OVA, which the author himself directed together with animator Hiroyuki Kitakubo.
Sacred art super offensive shell ORION Seishinsha
This fantasy work was originally serialized in Seishinsha's "Comic Gaia" magazine and published in book form in 1991 with substantial additions. The story is about a great priest, Fusen Michito, who summons the dark god Susanoo and tries to protect the great galactic empire from the Nine Dragons. In 2010, a 3D animated short film was produced.
Dominion Seishinsha
This is a comical science fiction gory action drama depicting a battle between the police tank squad to which Leona, a pilot of her beloved small tank Bonaparte, belongs and a gang of bad guys, the Takemoto gang. The series was first published in book form in 1986, mainly from the magazine "Monthly Comic Comic" published by Hakusensha, but later the material was added to the collection and published in book form by the current Seishinsha publishing company. Three animations have been produced, including one that was broadcast on television.
The key visuals released this time show "Ghost in the Shell" and other representative works of Shirow Masamune gathered in one place. The exhibition will include many original goods, brand collaboration goods, and collaborations with artists.
Incidentally, today, November 18, is a memorial day for the release of the movie "GHOST IN THE SHELL" (1995), which will celebrate its 30th anniversary next year in 2025. Together with the 30th anniversary of the Setagaya Literature Museum, the "The World of Shirow Masamune" exhibition will be a major topic of conversation in 2025.
