Satoko Shibata and Ozora Kimijima absorb nutrients at the festival.

Music festivals take place in the great outdoors. For audiences, it is a special space for a different kind of musical experience and a place to soothe the soul away from the hustle and bustle of the city. But what about the artists who take the stage? For them, a festival is something more than just a place to perform. We caught up with Satoko Shibata and Ozora Kimijima, who recently performed at "FUJI & SUN '25" in Fuji City, Shizuoka Prefecture, and asked them about the nourishment that only artists can know and absorb only at festivals.

FUJI & SUN's unique stage and distance from the audience.

-Today, the stage was flat and close to the audience. It was a different atmosphere than usual, wasn't it?

Kimishima: Yes. I was happy to see everyone's faces. But during the show, I could see everyone's faces so much that I became suspicious....

-What do you think is the attraction of "FUJI & SUN" compared to other festivals you have performed at?

Kimishima: First of all, it's fun to walk around. It's even more fun at night because it's really dark. Last year, I got lost and found myself standing on an empty street at night. I found myself standing there in the middle of the night with no one else around. He said, "Which way was it?

I think the temperature is just right. Other large festivals have a "festival! but "FUJI & SUN" is calm and relaxed. Sun" is calm and relaxed. I thought today's setlist might be a little gloomy, but everyone was listening to it well.

-Is the atmosphere of the customers also characteristic?

Kimishima: I have the impression that more people who are used to camping come to this festival than to other festivals. Perhaps because of this, I also get the sense that people have a certain level of respect for the location, saying, "This is how nature is supposed to be. I think this is probably due to the influence of the official SNS posts with photos.

-In terms of set lists, are they different for indoor gigs and outdoor festivals?

Kimishima: When I do a one-man show at a live house, the audience that comes to see me is 100%. Not so at festivals, but there are people who pass by and see me because they think I look kind of good.

-More than that, is it a matter of choosing songs that many people will accept?

Kimishima: I think that artists have more than a little desire to increase their fan base by having their songs selected and heard by an unspecified number of people. It is a chance to get their songs out to a wider audience. However, I am not very good at this kind of thinking. I like the idea of playing a song in this place, in this weather, in this way. Soloists have a lot of freedom.

-He said he would choose the music for the environment, not the person.

Kimishima: That's right. In that respect, "FUJI & SUN" suits me very well. The audience is also very attuned to the sound and the environment. Every time I go to FUJI & SUN, I feel that it is a very comfortable festival.
