Kagami & Goro's method of creating interesting collaborations.
MINNANO & TOILET

Kagami & Goro's method of creating interesting collaborations.

The collaboration between "SEPARATE BATH & TOILET" and "MINNANO" was very popular this spring. The second installment of this collaboration will be released on November 29 (Sat.). A pop-up store will also be held at "Dover Street Market Ginza" from November 29 (Sat) to December 5 (Fri)! So, what kind of items did they create this time? Let's have Ken Kagami and Goro Nakatsugawa, key persons in the collaboration, talk at length about what kind of items they have created this time!

I don't control it, but I look at it properly.

I'm sure the two of you come up with ideas together, but how do you hold planning meetings?

Kagami: In our first meeting, Goro came up with some pretty aggressive ideas. I would encourage him to escalate his ideas (laughs). (Laughs.) Then, I would cut them down, and we would land well on the right foot. When I work with Goro, I am basically passive.

Nakatsu River: Kagami-san is so good at getting ideas through that it worries me. He is a good listener, and he really gets things going. He creates an environment where it is easy to express one's opinions.

Kagami: Basically, I want to respect their opinions. But I know that Goro-san would never say such a reckless thing.

Nakatsu River: I also trusted you to come up with ideas because of you. He always said, "Say anything! I was able to express a lot of opinions to him.

Kagami: Working with Mr. Goro is so easy. In a good way, of course. I thought he was very particular, but he would collaborate with me to make his particulars fit "Sepabus. It was like aikido (laughs).

I think there are times, however, when extra direction is required.

Kagami: Collaboration should be easy to do. If it becomes difficult to do during the process, it will be unpleasant, and it will never be interesting. That is why creating an environment is really important.

Nakatsu River: There are times when you might say, "This is a little bit too brand new....

Kagami: Yes, there is! That's a killer word (laughs).

When you are corrected with such strong words, I feel I have no choice but to obey.

Nakatsu River: But in Kagami's case, she would casually tell me, "Maybe you should do it this way. Kagami-san casually tells me, "You should do this.

Kagami: Did you do that?

Nakatsu River: It was Kagami's idea to put a "new" sticker on the T-shirt or to make a T-shirt with a print of the sticker. After all, I want to make something I want to wear, and before that, it has to be something Kagami-san can wear, so I am conscious of that as a collaborator.

Rather than fully displaying your own colors, you mix each other's colors beautifully, or rather, you do so with an understanding of the other's characteristics.

Nakatsu River: Yes, that's right. I have a clear image of Mr. Kagami in my mind.

Kagami: Has there ever been a collaboration like this?

Nakatsu River: I can't say that (laughs).

Whether it is collaboration or client work, it is best to do it on the basis of mutual trust.

Kagami: I agree. Because I can trust them, I can say, "Do whatever you want. In such a case, I can already see the finished product. No matter how it turns out, that's fine. That is collaboration in the true sense of the word.

Nakatsu River: It is still good to have that as a premise.

Kagami: Even if it is different from the original image, it would be best if we could be amused and tolerant of it. I don't want to control it, but I do want to see it.

Nakatsu River: When I shoot with young creators, I basically leave it up to them. If I am there, I think they will become intimidated, and I think they will ask each time, "Is this the way you want it? I think they would be intimidated if I were there, and they would ask me each time, "Is this how you want it? That would not create anything interesting, so I basically say "OK" unless it's too much to ask.

It's not easy to say, "I won't say anything, but I'll look at it.

Nakatsu River: I think I have a duty to supervise them.

It would be nice if the other party knew that "anything is not possible.

Kagami: Yes, yes! Some people mistake anything for anything.

Nakatsu River: That's right. But there has to be a minimum line, and then we can try to see what we can do within that line.

Kagami-san, you are always thinking about how to attack within a certain framework.

Kagami: Of course it is. It would be a nuisance to say, "I don't like this rule, so let me play by this rule. But I'm an innocent person, so I want to push the envelope. I don't want to turn my back on what's trendy, but basically, I look at things from an angle.

Nakatsu River: Kagami-san's sensibility is amazing, isn't it? He is very aggressive, but actually lands in the right place. Even when I interact with him on a daily basis, I always feel that he is a very solid person.

You also reply to e-mails very quickly, don't you?

Kagami: I'm impatient (laughs).

Nakatsu River: And when the meeting is over, I always get a message saying, "Thank you very much for today.

Kagami: I don't want to be the kind of lighthearted person who says, "Nice to meet you again. I don't want to be the kind of person who says, "Nice to meet you again.

In a sense, you are just doing what is natural for a member of society.

Kagami: Yes, yes, that's right. If you greet them like that, you can treat them with the same feeling the next time you see them.

Nakatsu River: It really makes you think straight. That's why when we collaborate, we are socially conscious. You don't deviate from the path.
