A “typical” style that follows your rules.
-I was interested to see that everyone has their own style, but is there anything you pay attention to in terms of the clothes you wear?
Shimada: I have always been like this. I come to the court in my sporty, everyday clothes, play, and then either go home in the same clothes or move on to the next schedule. I like the feeling of being able to go anywhere in tennis attire. For example, when I am on the train, if I have my racket slung over my shoulder, I feel superior and proud that I have played tennis (laughs).
Arai: That's bad (laughs).
Shimada: Isn't it cool to be an uncle whose hobby is tennis (laughs)? Tokyo is filled with museums, movie theaters, dining, shopping, and all sorts of other entertainment, so it is the perfect sport for me, a man of many hobbies.
Arai: I can't walk out of the house without having everything in “HEAD TO TOE”. I can't even walk outside because I feel uncomfortable if I don't have everything I need for "head to toe. I launched a brand called "Set In" and I am wearing it today, but it is not tennis wear, it is everyday wear. I wear it to work as well. I have watched many tennis players since I was a child, but I have always looked at what they wear and what brands they use, not what they play. I am the type of person who starts with the outfit. At the time, manufacturers recommended wearing top and bottom sets, so I naturally established that rule in my mind. I feel better by somehow picking up colors and matching patterns. I learned the basics of color matching, which is essential for a dressmaker, from playing tennis (laughs).
-Mr. Nakamura's style is quite sporty and classic tennis wear.
Nakamura: I am the complete opposite of the two of you. I want to separate myself from my work as much as possible, and playing tennis once a week in a completely different community is refreshing. In that community, we don't know each other's work, and that makes me feel comfortable. I also like clothes, but like Pro Staff, I like quiet clothes, not flashy ones. I usually wear chic colors like black and navy for work, so I enjoy wearing blue and other colors when I play tennis.
Arai: It is up to each individual, but feeling uplifted and immersed in a sense of superiority is one of the best parts of wearing something. Mr. Nakamura, you are wearing a "Pro Staff" sweatshirt from "Wilson" as innerwear today.
Nakamura: Yes, I do. I really like "Pro Staff. I hope to change my shoes to "Wilson" soon.
Arai: If a manufacturer were to hear this, it would bring tears to their eyes (laughs). I was reminded once again of the tremendous power of tennis, that we could play together and get to know each other so well, even though we had never met before.
Shimada: There are many different manufacturers in the tennis industry, but Wilson's approach transcends the boundaries of brands and ties, and I felt their determination to further boost the tennis industry itself, as an amateur. That is exactly what you are doing with Hui-Nam, isn't it?
Nakamura: That atmosphere is what makes it so enjoyable for beginners to come in.
Arai: I have also launched my own brand, "Set-In," and am doing my best to make tennis as exciting as possible. Each manufacturer feels the same way, and we all have the same goal of making tennis more exciting, just in different ways. We can't just do the same thing, so by utilizing our strengths, I think this has created a synergistic effect. I would like to make this movement bigger by working together.
