What did everyone have drawn?
Ms. Kagami’s impromptu illustration session drew a crowd that included a self-proclaimed “millionaire,” an Australian who happened to stumble upon the event, and some ardent fans. As they looked at the finished drawings, everyone seemed satisfied, with smiles spreading across their faces.
So, how did the collaboration between Ms. Kagami and the customers turn out? We’ll share the results along with feedback from the participants!
Mr. Tanaka, 23, office worker
"I've been wanting a backpack that really makes a statement for a while, so I went with a bright red one from *Outdoor Products*! When I mentioned that I tend to shop too much, he casually drew ‘1.5 million yen’ on it (lol). Thinking of it as a bag worth that much, I probably won’t be shopping for a while. I’ve always wanted to meet Mr. Kagami, so it feels like a dream come true. If you spot this bag around town, feel free to say hi!”
Megumi Sakano, Office Worker
"I chose this size so I could carry just my wallet, phone, and cigarettes when I pop out for a quick errand. When I told Mr. Kagami, 'My parents are doctors, and we own two houses in Tokyo,' he drew this for me (laughs). People at work tease me for being the ‘rich kid,’ but that’s not really true at all—this is exactly who I am. I’ve really been given the ultimate compliment!”
Mr. Matsunaga, 42, self-employed
"I bought this for my child to use when we go out. Since I don’t yet understand the appeal of *Outdoor Products* or Mr. Kagami’s work, I want to have my child wear it until I do. I had all sorts of designs in mind that I wanted him to draw, but I ended up asking for the DFW signature (a graffiti crew that includes Barry McGee and others, of which Mr. Kagami is also a member). It’s not often you get the chance to have something you love drawn for you, so I was really happy.”
Mito, 24, office worker
"I've been wanting a bag for about a month now, and I just happened to be browsing Fuinam when I saw you were having an event, so I rushed over!
Since my company allows casual dress, I’m hoping to use it both for work and on my days off. After much deliberation, I had Mr. Kagami draw my favorite penguin on it. It has a strong bird-like feel to it and really gives it a unique charm.”
Natsuko Takeda, 40, temporary employee
"I always try to go to Kagami-san's events whenever I can. I first discovered her work over 10 years ago when I found some of her merchandise at a boutique. I love how he never wavers and is full of childlike wonder. I asked him, ‘Please draw a poop like you always do,’ and told him to write whatever he thought I might be thinking while carrying this bag—and he came up with ‘There’s money in here’ (laughs). I really admire his ability to improvise like that!”
Shang, 48, office worker
"Since I usually carry a lot of stuff, I decided to go for the larger size. It’s big enough to take to the gym, and I thought it might look cute even if my wife used it. I left the illustration up to you and just asked for a dog, but you even drew underwear and socks as a bonus (lol). It’s already a treasure to me. I plan to use it all the time and get it really dirty. Kagami-san’s art has incredible energy!"
(From left) Will, Harlie, and Katherine from Australia
"I came to Japan two weeks ago, and today is my last day. I just happened to stumble upon this event while walking around. I didn't know who Mr. Kagami was, but when I found out he was a famous artist, I decided to ask him to draw something for me even though I hadn't planned on buying a bag. The Tokyo Tower was absolutely amazing, so I asked him to draw that as a memento. I was so happy to get such a wonderful souvenir, and above all, Japan was the best!"
Mr. Yamazaki, 38, office worker
"It’s great as a bag, but since it features Ms. Kagami’s illustrations, I think it would also make a nice piece of art to display at home. I have a lot of caps, so I plan to stuff the bag full of them and keep it in my room. For the price of the bag alone, this is such a steal!"
Mr. Inui, 33, office worker
"This is my bag for days off. I usually go for darker colors, so I decided to pick something a little brighter this time. Since *Outdoor Products* is easy on the wallet, I took a chance and went for it. When I told Ms. Kagami, 'I’d like something that captures the vibe of a day off,' she drew her signature dog for me. I’m planning to use it with my kids once they’re older. They even put the pattern all the way to the edges—it’s absolutely perfect!”
Keiji, 31, office worker
"I usually carry a backpack, so I wanted something bigger that I could wear crossbody—that's why I chose this duffel bag. Ms. Kagami knew that my dad and I always wear white shirts, so that's how she came up with this message (laughs). I'm thinking of taking it with me on my next business trip abroad."
Mr. Matsumura, 55, office worker
"When people think of Kagami, they usually think of poop or underwear, but I thought a dog might be nice. Before I came, I even asked a generative AI, 'If you were to draw something for me, what would you recommend?' The color of the bag is spring-like, which is nice. I plan to take good care of it."
Mr. Igarashi, 34, office worker
"I bought this size because I couldn't find the perfect bag for going out to lunch with my coworkers. I just wanted to carry my toothbrush and cell phone in it, like a typical office lady. When I told him I wanted to use it as a 'bag-in-bag,' he drew this for me. It's exactly what I had in mind (lol)—that's Kagami-san for you!"
Ms. Ochiai, 34, advertising agency / Seika, 2
"I bought this for my child. I didn’t ask for any specific illustration—I just told them my child’s name (Mado)—and they drew this for us. My child loves cars, so I thought this would be perfect. I’d be happy if they use it until they grow up."
Mr. Nakano, 47, office worker
"I first found out about Ms. Kagami on Instagram about three years ago. I’ve been following her ever since, and to me, she’s an idol I can actually meet in person (laughs). This T-shirt is hers, and I’m using the Ikebukuro drawstring bag, too. To be honest, I haven’t really figured out what to do with the bag yet… I definitely can’t bring it to a parent-teacher meeting. I’ll use it at some point, keeping the occasion in mind.”
Rhythm, age 5
"Kagami-san signed my name for me! It's so cute. I want to use it to carry my phone or a book. I'll always love you!"
