monessay ─ Memories of New England

This is "monessay," a series of essays by Toshiyuki Tsai, publisher of Huinum and editor-in-chief of Huinum Unplugged. It is an essay through objects, so it is called "monessay." There is no twist, but it is not a poop, either. The column that had been serialized in a certain magazine for quite a long time has been discontinued, and a new column has been started in Finamu. This time, I'll be looking at New Balance's 990v5.

that (someone or something distant from both speaker and listener, or situation unfamiliar to both speaker and listener)When I was in my 20s, I once lived for about six months in Boston, the center of the New England region of the United States. It was a kind of language study abroad.

5th note in the tonic solfa representation of the diatonic scaleSpring in Ston is cold. When I arrived in light clothes without thinking, I regretted that I had brought the wrong clothes. Steam is still cooking in the apartment. In other words, it is midwinter even in May.

wildRight after the ball is in season in the spring, everyone at the Fenway Park game is dressed in heavy clothing and winterized. I'm sure you've seen that scene before.

learningSince it is raw, there is basically not much time.
light (e.g. colour, color)At that time, Ralph Lauren outlets were all the rage in Japan, and Labrador Retriever had just opened. Made in the World" was also buying a lot of big chinos and big polos.

andIn those days, it was possible to do business in Japan by buying such items and returning home.

(used with suffix -san or -sama) endearing term for unrelated older man or womanThe buyers from Japan came to Boston in droves.

4th note in the tonic solfa representation of the diatonic scaleL.L. Bean is headquartered in Freeport, IN, an area rich in nature and outdoor activities. It's no wonder that L.L. Bean was born here.

andThis means that many tourists visit the area, and there was a large outlet mall.

day (of the month)Everyone who comes from the mainland has a destination there, but due to transportation problems, they have to touch down in Boston once and then drive two hours to get there by rental car. Of course, L.L. Bean has a directly managed store, and Ralph Lauren has a larger selection than in neighboring states.

ba (Haitian dance music)It depends on the year, but a good friend of mine used to go across New Hampshire and Vermont from here to the Niagara area. He was very gutsy.

young (animal)During the 1960s and 1970s, I helped them to earn money for their stay and rented a car to drive around the region looking for treasures on my own.

that (someone or something distant from both speaker and listener, or situation unfamiliar to both speaker and listener)I did, and found a bunch of vintage jeans in a warehouse on the second floor of a bowling alley in New London, Connecticut, and sent them to Japan.

giIt was here in New London that I got four pairs of Jordans' first model red and black deads. I even discovered the rule that if "Dis Old Heart of Mine" by the Isley Brothers, covered by Rod Stewart, comes on during a drive, you get a rare item.

that (someone or something distant from both speaker and listener, or situation unfamiliar to both speaker and listener)I was a New Balance fanatic, and at that time, I went to Boston or Lawrence, a town about 30 minutes away by car, most often. The headquarters of New Balance was located there, and the first floor of the building was an outlet store. There was also a small-scale outlet store called "Ralph Lauren" and a few other small outlet stores.
young (animal)I didn't find anything interesting at all at the New Balance store at the New Balance store in Tokyo, Japan. There was almost no high-end line here, only the kind of shoes sold at mass retailers.

that (someone or something distant from both speaker and listener, or situation unfamiliar to both speaker and listener)After the "Mere Old Man" returned to Japan and went to this head office twice after that as an editor. The outlet remains the same.

just (e.g. "just try it")Last year, on the way to Boston by car from New York, I saw a big sign on the right side of Route 90 at Interstates that said New Balance. I'm assuming that is the new headquarters.
