How to make your style with MAISON SPECIAL

Two stylists breathe life into this maison special setup.

MAISON SPECIAL is an up-and-coming brand that launched in Spring/Summer 2007. The brand's creations, which combine flexible design with high functionality, are already attracting attention from the street. The autumn/winter collection launched by this label features a variety of set-ups. The collection will feature a wide range of items, including those made from top-class fabrics such as Loro Piana and Rimonta. For this issue, we invited Shun Katagai and Nobuyuki Ida, both stylists active in magazines and advertisements, to talk about the appeal of the collection and suggest three coordinated outfits using "Maison Special" set-ups as the subject matter.

Style 01 In the cultural essence.
Slightly scented.

Jacket:ESWOOL GLEN CHECK RAGLAN TAILOR JACKET ¥14,800+tax, Pants:ESWOOL GLEN CHECK WIDE TAPERED PANTS ¥9,800+TAX, T-Shirts: USED, Shoes: DIEGO VANASSIBARA

Do you often wear a set-up?

I have nearly 10 pieces and I like it that much and wear it often. I use it not only for meetings and parties, but also for street wear. When I was an assistant, I even tied it up for photo shoots. The jacket and pants can be used separately, so it is a very useful item.

How do you feel about wearing the "Maison Special" set-up?

This model has a set-in raglan, so the arms can move easily. And because it is oversized, you can wear a parka or thick knit as an inner layer, so it will be useful in the coming season.

What are your honest impressions of the "Maison Special" lineup this time around?

I had an image that there were many items made of tech fabrics during the spring/summer season, but I was surprised to see a wide variety of classic plaid and corduroy items as well. If I could buy a set-up in this price range, the range of outfits would be much wider.

What are your styling tips?

Against the classic glen check setup, we dared to wear a vintage band T and balanced the overall look with well-designed shoes with wingtips and wood panels on the feet.

Do you have any styling rules?

The sense of mixing and matching is important to us. I am always conscious of how to make the overall atmosphere cohesive while changing all the tastes of the brand for the entire item. I like to coordinate items in a way that betrays the standard way of dressing, such as adding a hint of hassle somewhere if I'm wearing a jacket, or matching boots on the feet if I'm wearing casual clothes.

Style 02 The corduroy set-up includes
Adds elegance.

Jacket:WIDE CORDUROY OVER SIZE JACKET ¥18,000+tax, Pants:WIDE CORDUROY PANTS ¥12,800+TAX, Shirts: Maison Jejia, Handkerchief: HOLLYWOOD RANCH MARKET, Shoes: Clarks

How do you feel about the comfort of this corduroy set-up?

It has a nice soft texture and warm, raised feel to it, just like it looks. If you have it in your wardrobe, it has an appeal that will make you pick it up. Both the jacket and the pants are made in a big size, so I think people of all shapes and sizes can get into it. Also, the glossy feel of the jacket gives it a rich mood, which is wonderful.

What is the point of wearing it?

A vintage-like thick-ribbed corduroy set-up with a collarless shirt is a daringly clean look. To keep it from being too clean, I added a playful touch by using a handkerchief in place of a chief. The top and bottom are both oversized, so I rolled them up to add a bit of lightness.

Style 03 One-tone and layered.
Play it all out!

Jacket:OUTLAST NO COLLAR JACKET ¥15,800+tax, Pants:OUTLAST TAPERED SLACKS ¥10,000+TAX, Coat: AiE, Knit: Scye, Shoes: Salomon

Do you have a theme for this styling?

The theme is "athleisure. This collarless set-up was the simplest of all the pieces I chose, so I played around with it quite a bit. I went out of my way to match a shiny coat as an inner layer of the jacket and a hooded high-neck knit as an inner layer of the coat. While the overall color scheme is earthy, the black on the feet adds a touch of edge.

The combination of materials is also interesting.

Since this is a woolen set-up, I thought the nylon would make the material stand out even more. I also added a sporty element by matching it with treerun shoes.

Do you have any tips on how to wear a collarless jacket?

You can throw it on like a cardigan, but if you want an aggressive styling, bring an accent around the neck for a well-balanced look.
