The amount of luggage has increased, but the luggage remains the same. Keiji Kaneko (L'ECHOPPE)
〜PACK FOR LIFE ~ OUTDOOR PRODUCTS

The amount of luggage has increased, but not changed.
Keiji Kaneko (L'ECHOPPE)

Those of you who have been there once and taken a glance at the clothes on the racks will agree that Reshop is a bit of a special kind of store. The products are at once nostalgic and strangely fresh. And the colors of the store are directly related to the personality of the store's owner, Keiji Kaneko. What kind of scenery has he seen and what has he gained from it? We asked him to take a moment to look back on his past, in reference to the "Pack for Life" theme of OUTDOOR PRODUCTS, a company with which Reshop has close ties.

The contents have not changed from the past, but maybe the capacity of the bag itself has increased .

I see that your experiences and perspectives have changed. Conversely, what do you think are the unchanging aspects of Kaneko-san that you mentioned earlier?

Kaneko:The way I look at things, the fascination I feel for the thickness of the background, and so on, I guess that hasn't changed. I have been doing it for over 20 years. I guess it's just that I like clothes, simply put. But before, I used to have the feeling that I wanted something first, and then I would buy it on the side, but now, that "want" has subsided. But now, that "wanting" has subsided. Instead, I have a stronger sense of wanting to show the world the value of the things I have been attracted to. So I feel that I have become more calm and objective, and I am now able to properly evaluate any object in my own way. I still like what I like, but I am now able to deal with it in a more flat manner. The contents of my bag haven't changed, but maybe the capacity of the bag itself to hold them has increased. ...... (LOL)

I'm sorry to hear that you have taken the theme into consideration (laughs).

Kaneko:Ahahaha (laughs) . But even if I told you, the amount of information I have is very limited. I don't go to clothing stores very often, I just take a walk and look in vintage clothing stores, I don't look at magazines at all, and my Instagram feed is pretty much a drip. . I only go to exhibitions and have conversations with the people who make things. . I feel like that's the only thing that feeds me. . I think it is the only experience that is still growing.

I'm sure that was the right pace for you, Mr. Kaneko.

Kaneko:When I was working at a mass retailer, which I did not want to work at all, I had no idea that I would be able to open such a store in Aoyama in the future. However, I continued to hold on to the feeling of being able to say that I loved it, and now that it has taken this form, it is finally being conveyed to the people of the world, little by little. . I have lived for more than 40 years, but recently I have come to know this feeling for the first time. . It hasn't bloomed yet, but I must be a late bloomer. Lately, the number of young customers coming to "reshop" has been increasing. At a pop-up we did a while ago, we had a lot of college students and 24- to 25-year-olds come to our store. Young people are interested in what we do, and they come all the way to see us to listen to what we have to say. I am sure it is refreshing for people who were born in a world where there is a lot of rational clothing and convenient things. I believe that the future of fashion is bright.
