The future of functional clothing as seen through Mountainsmith's designs.
Thinking of Post Functional Wears

The future of functional clothing as seen through Mountainsmith's designs.

Mountainsmith, a bag brand born in 1979 in Golden, Colorado, U.S.A., is now about 40 years old. Many people may have seen the iconic "Lumber Pack" design in Japan in the 1990s. Today, the brand continues to create products that focus on the outdoors, but did you know that it has launched an apparel line starting in the fall/winter of 2019? The director of the line is Toshifumi Yamane of F/CE (F/CE.®). We sat down with Naoki Kuze, who handles PR for the brand, to talk about everything from how he came to be involved with the brand to its design philosophy.

Mr. Yamane talks about four recommended items.

Mountainsmith" items are made with a firm philosophy. According to Mr. Yamane, "Every season, we design with an underlying theme. This theme comes from delving into the American culture of the 1970s. This season's theme is "hippie. Lastly, we asked Mr. Yamane to introduce four items that he recommends for spring/summer 2020.

Recommended Item 01: x Grateful Dead T-Shirt

Grateful Dead T-shirt each ¥9,800+tax

The Grateful Dead were a band born in the 1960s, and I think the music movement of the 1970s was influenced by them, so I designed this T-shirt reflecting that sense of the times. The logo of "Mountainsmith" also shows such influence, and I thought that the staff at that time must have liked that kind of culture. I thought that the staff at that time must have liked that kind of culture, and I developed the image of the T-shirt. The fabric is organic cotton.

Recommended Item 02: Pikes Safari Coat

Pikes Safari Coat ¥32,000+TAX

It is made of recycled nylon with a taslan finish, a lightweight material with a soft, cotton-like look. Mesh fabric like that used for bags and parts such as key rings are scattered throughout to give it a slightly gear-like mood. The silhouette when worn is slightly oversized. Clothes made by outdoor clothing makers are patterned according to their interpretation, but I myself am also a fashion designer, so I have incorporated a feeling of sloping shoulders and a sense of being in tune with the fashionable mood of today. American outdoor brands don't do this kind of design, so I made sure to fuse it with Japanese fashion sense in a good way.

Recommended Item 03: Jackson Reversible Vest

Reversible vest ¥23,000+tax each

This vest has large pockets on both sides. I designed it with the image of a vest that can be worn like a sack so that when the brand's iconic "lumbar pack" is worn on the waist, it can be worn like a sack so that you can put your belongings in the front as well. It is one of the iconic items of [Mountainsmith]. Like the coat, this item is also made of recycled Taslan nylon. There are not many variations of fabrics throughout the collection. This is because the same fabric is used for the bags to create various designs. The overall item composition is also based on the way that only a bag brand can create.

Recommended Item 04: Garfield Pants Light

Garfield pants ¥22,000+TAX each

This one is also made of recycled Taslan nylon. As with the vest, we have enhanced the storage capacity. We also added action pleats on the knees and a figure-hugging silhouette to create a functional design that can be used for hiking and mountain climbing. Another small detail is the slightly angled zipper on the front pocket. I have always loved punk and hardcore music, and vintage pants often have hand-sewn zippers on a slant.
