With the opening of its new store at NEWoMan Yokohama on June 24 (Wed.), MAISON SPECIAL is gaining momentum. They have launched "Sustainable Remake Bottom" at the same time, with the concept of delivering "one-of-a-kind items with value. For this project, they invited stylist Akira Maruyama and You Tuber Nakamu as guests to create denim pants full of originality. Let's take a look at their pride in their respective bottoms, and what they have found to be the answer to the clothing they want to pass on to the next generation.

PROFILE

Akira Maruyama
stylist

. Born in Nagano, Japan in 1977. After graduating from a vocational school, studied under Keisuke Baba and became independent in 2006. He is known for his creations that create a unique view of the world that encompasses various cultures. He is active in a variety of genres, including magazines, advertisements, and TV personalities.

I was impressed by how quickly and easily you came up with ideas for the pants. What did you envision?

. When I first saw the sample, I liked the denim trim at the waist. I often wear denim with a classic check jacket, so I thought it would be a perfect match.

It has a somewhat London traditional feel to it.

Yes, it has a bit of an Englishness to it , doesn't it? . I'm glad I chose a firm wool fabric instead of a loose one. If the fabric is soft, it's hard to create a three-dimensional silhouette. Full-length pants might be a little heavy, but shorts can be a little thicker.

Do you often wear checks yourself?

I like it. Lately I've been wearing red tartan check pants and blousons a lot. They have a nostalgic, Checkers-esque feel to them, which is kind of nice. And they are surprisingly easy to match. Besides, I don't really like the all-black style. If the top is black, I am more attracted to bright colors on the bottom.

Do you have an image of Maruyama = London, England, or are you conscious of that?

No, it's like the two models I brought with me this time (laughs). (laughs) . I was doing what I liked, and that's what people around me thought.

You suggested a model from the stage of deciding on the fabric, but did you have an image of the styling right away?

Yes . . I thought it would be easier to wear something a little more punkish. . I thought that the wide shorts would give a sense of nookiness to the look. The denim at the waist also has a nice crushed look.

On the other hand, it looks like it would go well with a simple outfit.

Yes, absolutely yes. . The bottom is wide, so the top can be tight. The checks are not flashy, so they go well with any items, I'm sure.

. This time, the length was adjusted to be 7 cm shorter. Is this the length you often wear?

Yes, but if I were to wear them, I might make them a little shorter. I feel comfortable wearing them just above the knee. It's not too childish. The center crease adds a touch of class, and I think I did a good job.

You usually make costumes for photo shoots, but it seems that your approach will be different from items like this.

. it's better to go a little overboard with the shooting costumes. It's more like adding to the total. But for everyday items like this, I think it is important to subtract. If I find pants with a silhouette I like, I choose the fabric myself and have a craftsman draw a pattern and make the pants from scratch. Once I have a pattern, I can have them finished rather quickly, which is great.

It's a full order. Making clothes and styling them is a different way to use your head. ......

No, surprisingly, I don't use my head the same way. I just get more nervous when I make something. If I have time, I can make some corrections, but mostly it's a one-shot deal. When the finished product came in, there were times when the nuances were a little different, so I was very nervous every time. I still get nervous, especially when it comes to the ladies.

This time, too, it was a one-shot deal, but how did you like the finished product? These pants are sewn by hand, one by one, by a craftsman in Hyogo Prefecture. . Therefore, they cannot be mass-produced, but I felt that the quality was quite high.

Oh, yeah , that's right. I was impressed that you did a pretty detailed job. The sides are also switched, and this is where the accents are. It's perfect as a finished product. . I mean, when I was choosing the fabric, I was sure that I could make a good one. The look of the fabric is great, and the bounciness is like an imported brand. This is a fabric that can become vintage. There are clothes that get ruined after one season, and there are clothes that improve in texture after one season of wear. I think these pants are the latter. I would be happy if I could express sustainability in that sense.

Sustainable Remake Waist Denim Mix Shorts by Akira Maruyama ¥13,000+TAX each

Based on wide shorts, these shorts are made of green and brown checked wool selected by Akira Maruyama. The thick and resilient fabric creates a wide silhouette that spreads out toward the hem. The waist part is accented with a deconstructed pair of used denim pants. Available in sizes 44, 46, and 48.
It will be released in limited quantities at Newman Yokohama (NEWoMan Yokohama), which will open on Wednesday, June 24.
