When did you decide to become a stylist?

When I was a senior in college, I applied to a textile trading company, but I was spectacularly rejected (laughs). (Laughs.) I didn't go to a clothing school, so in retrospect, I think I was reckless. Then, Mr. Kai, a stylist, was looking for an assistant, and that's how I got into the world of stylists. So it wasn't always my dream. At first, I thought I would quit and get a job if it didn't seem like it would be possible. But it was so rewarding that I got more and more into it. The workload was crazy and hard, but it was interesting to see my leases published in a national magazine and to visualize them. I thought, "This is an experience I would never have had if I had worked for a large company.

You have built up your career through such training. Do you have any specialties as a stylist?

Well, I try to value the personality of the wearer. I prefer an atmosphere in which the character of the wearer comes through, rather than having the wearer blend into the world as a model. I want to look at both high brands and real clothes from the same perspective. I want to create an atmosphere in which the wearer is not wearing a brand-name item, but is wearing it as a piece of clothing. That is what I always want to express. I think it is our mission to create a world view on top of that.

What kind of fashion did you originally like?

People say this is surprising, but when I was just starting out as an assistant, I liked the so-called high street. I was like Virgil and Kanye. Then, through my work, I got to know various brands, and my clothes started to change. I was ignorant of fashion in a sense, but I was able to learn everything I needed to know about fashion. In a way, I think it was easier for me to absorb many things because I was ignorant about fashion.

You chose Challenger this time. Why did you choose it?

I've been looking for these retro running shoes lately. If I found a good color scheme, I was definitely going to buy them. I like blue, so this coloring was perfect for me. And, to go into detail, I like that the sole is not pure white, but has a yellowish tint to it. This gives them a vintage look, which is cool, and they are easy to match.

Do you get inspiration from vintage or old things like this?

In my work, I look back at old magazines and photo albums. I dig deep into the cultural background and think about how to incorporate it into a modern look. I think it is very important to interpret past masterpieces and make them your own, as is the case with these sneakers and sweatpants.

The Challenger revolutionized running shoes by adopting three different materials for the upper: nylon, mesh, and suede. The shoe features a pigeon-eye design that allows the laces to be adjusted to the width of the foot for a comfortable fit. Vintage-inspired details such as the blurred logo on the heel are also noteworthy.
