DAIRIKU OKAMOTO × BARBOUR for EDIFICE OLD BEDALE

PROFILE

Dairiku Okamoto
DAIRIKU Designer

Born in Nara , Japan in 1994. While enrolled in the Fashion Design Department at Vantan Design Institute, he founded his eponymous brand, "DAIRIKU," which won the Grand Prix at the Asia Fashion Collection in 2016 and presented its collection in New York the following year. He sets themes inspired by movies and creates clothes according to the stories he depicts. This year, he has watched over 220 films.

Wear long-established brands as you normally would.

Dairiku" is a honeymoon with movies, isn't it? How do you decide on the theme of the film each time?

Okamoto: Sometimes the theme of a collection is inspired by a favorite movie, but it often depends on my mood at the time. The theme for the upcoming Spring/Summer 2021 collection is "Flower Children. But at first, I was thinking of a completely different theme. . After the period of self-restraint this spring, I reconsidered and decided to go with a brighter theme for the collection.

What movie did you use as a motif?

Okamoto: For Fall/Winter 2020, the theme was "New Hollywood" inspired by "Taxi Driver" and the image of an anti-hero. I wanted to do the exact opposite and make it lighthearted, so I mixed "Easy Rider" and the Woodstock Festival documentary "WOOD STOCK 3days of peace and music" to create a worldview.

I am interested in the new items. ......

Okamoto: . For example, we make leather jackets and leather pants that are all hand-knit. . I wanted to create a hippie atmosphere from the late 60's to the early 70's by doing so. Each season, I make a few pieces of clothing that symbolize that era but are not worn today, and that is part of the fun.

A. Please tell us what you consider important when making clothes.

Okamoto: There are many things to consider, such as what items to use and how to style them, but I hope that people will feel a nostalgic atmosphere, or that they will talk about how they feel like in that movie. I think it would be interesting for people to buy the clothes and then see the work and say, "So this is the original story! It would be interesting to know that this is the original story.

You like vintage clothing, don't you, Mr. Tairiku? Do you have a sense of knowing the origin of the clothes, or does it overlap with your own experiences?

Okamoto: Yes, that's right. I have many such experiences myself. I like vintage clothing, so I incorporate details of old clothes, but I think that if people notice the similarity to Dairiku's clothes at a thrift store, it will give them a chance to get to know the clothes.

What kind of vintage clothing do you like?

Okamoto: I tend to pick up American vintage clothing more often, but recently I've been interested in British vintage clothing as well. For the spring/summer 2022 collection at [Dailik], I'm thinking of adding British elements as well.

The custom-made outerwear you are wearing today is by "BABOUR," a long-established British brand.

Okamoto: Just the other day, I watched a YouTube video of a man named Eiji Katano introducing "BABUA" (laughs). (Laughs.) I was just thinking again how interesting the brand is the more you know about it, such as the crown on the tag.

Babur is also popular on the vintage clothing market.

Okamoto: Babur has a strong image of waxed jackets, and when I hear the name "Babur," I associate it with that smell. However, the EDIFITH special-order jackets are unwaxed, so they are easy to handle and can be worn without hesitation. Moreover, they are lighter than waxed jackets, so they are more comfortable to wear.

This special order is available in Tamamushi colors.

Okamoto: Expressive when the light hits it . Beautiful.

. The fine-ribbed corduroy on the collar is another key point.

Okamoto: Just by changing the corduroy collar, it looks sleek and stylish. . Also, I like the side vents, which give it a loose look. . Without them, it would look a bit stiff. The raglan sleeves are comfortable, and the shoulders are not strained, so I could wear it relaxed. . It might be nice to choose a large size and roll up the sleeves.

How did you coordinate this special-order outerwear?

Okamoto: The inner layer is a wool shirt from [ALLEGE], to which I added a T-shirt from Spike Lee's "Mo' Better Blues" movie. This is my usual coordination.

. It fits in well with your everyday outfits, doesn't it?

Okamoto: If I were to wear "BABUA", I would not think too much about it, and I think it would be just right to wear it with my normal style. If you are too particular about the rules, you will narrow the range of your outfits, so I think it's fine to wear whatever you want. To some extent, the background of the brand and the formulas for dressing are important, but I think it's okay to wear it as casually as this.
