SNEAKER INFO Vol.1
Sneaker situation in 2021.

From the latest performance shoes to limited editions, collaborations, faithful reissues, and even top maisons, the sneaker market is growing larger and larger every year. So what are the sneaker trends for 2021? We would like to find the answer to this question by asking the directors of sneaker stores that lead the Japanese sneaker scene about this year's sneakers, information on new releases, and sneaker styles proposed by popular select stores.

The fundamentals of how shoes are made changed dramatically in the 2010s.

Before going into this year's sneaker scene, I would like to review the sneaker scene from the 1990s to the 2010s, in a 10-year cycle.

Kunii:For the sake of clarity, I will venture to speak from the 70's. First, the 70's saw the birth of sneakers that are still being reissued and released today. In the 80's, the Golden Era, the prototype of today's sneaker scene, was formed, and the cushioning competition intensified. In the 90's, a wave of technology arrived in the upper, and models that fit a wider range of fields, including not only sports but also outdoor activities, began to appear in many cases. Furthermore, from the late 1990s, lifestyle-oriented brands and models were released, and through the 2000s, there was a rush of collaborations. It was a time when a business model was established in which sneaker stores, apparel brands, artists, and various other people collaborated to create new sneakers.

I see. It is very easy to understand.

Kunii:From there, in the 2010s, the fundamentals of how shoes themselves are made changed dramatically. For example, with the emergence of knitting methods for uppers, no-sew designs and seamless sneaker construction with reduced sewing became the norm. The same is true of the midsole, which for more than 30 years had been made of either EVA ( ethylene vinyl acetate ) or PU ( polyurethane ). This was the beginning of a major shift from structure and mechanism to research and development of materials.

In other words, in the 2010s, materials and functionality were more prominent than design.

Kunii:Until the mid-1990s, shoe designers also designed functionality, but since the 2000s, the role has been subdivided and the method of production has changed completely, with technology being developed separately for technology and designing to make the most of it. This is why I think that the development of functions and materials has advanced at a dash. Also, models that use electricity, such as Nike's "Adapt," and models that are not purely for competitions have increased due to the diversification of lifestyles.

It is true that until the 2000s, after sneakers became a fashion item, there were many design-driven models, for better or for worse. In the 2010s, however, the line between so-called performance shoes and fashionable sneakers disappeared, and the range of choices expanded.

Kunii:Digital technology has grown at a tremendous pace, and at the same time, lifestyles have changed dramatically. The boundaries between everything have become blurred. In the past, you had to go to a store to find out if they even had the product in stock. But now, it's almost all done online. Of course, both are real, but now there are a certain number of people who buy sneakers not to wear, but to invest in them. You could call it a new business model.... . Personally, I think sneakers should be worn.

Sneakers' return to their roots?

. That's how big the sneaker market has become on a global scale. Now, let's move on to the year 2021. What will be popular in 2021?

Kunii:The major trend is court shoes. Of course, there are tons of recommendations, but for this article, we have chosen a few for ease of understanding. Nike's Air Force 1, Adidas' Forum, Puma's Suede, New Balance's 550, and finally, although not court shoes, Ag's Westsider Low Weather.

. It's a familiar lineup, isn't it?

Kunii:Sneakerheads and fashion freaks alike have been looking in the same direction for the past few years. For example, there has been a recent trend of crossover between the two extremes of fashion and sports, luxury and street fashion. We even collaborated with Givenchy. However, since last year, I feel that we are gradually returning to our original position.

What is the original position?

Kunii:. Items that give a sense of the brand's identity, or timeless models. Last year, New Balance's "992" was a good example. The "2002R," released in the latter half of the year, also sold at a tremendous rate. In short, I think that customers' tastes have shifted to something that fits in with their feet rather than something that makes their feet stand out. In fact, the best-selling pair during the last year was the white-on-white low-cut "Air Force 1" by Nike.

That was unexpected.

Kunii:. It's also embarrassing to wear only models that are considered to be hyped or rare. These days, I rather see them on social networking sites, but the chances of seeing people wearing them on the street may have decreased. Under such circumstances, on the contrary, white-on-white "Air Force 1" shoes have been out of stock since last year, and when they did come in, they would sell out immediately. I got curious and asked a girl I know about it, and she told me on SNS, "I heard they're going to run out of Air Force 1s!" . I asked a girl I know, and she told me that the reason was that a rumor spread on social networking sites that "Air Force 1 is going to run out!

I didn't know that happened.

Kunii:There is even a brand called "Foxtrot Uniform," which recreates the tan shoelaces seen on '80s bashes. So, to put it another way, there is a trend among young people, especially in Generation Z, to buy what everyone else is following, but to DIY it to incorporate it into their own style. They want what they want no matter how much they pay for it, and they don't want what they don't need no matter how cheap it is.

. Younger generations are more demanding. . So, in general, they are more interested in standard models, such as coats.

Kunii:Yes . I think that the ones that have a clear reason to buy them will sell. However, it is not the store's role to push the same things within a set timeline, but rather to provide users with new options. In the Corona Disaster, the number of people who shop digitally is expected to increase, so it is up to the stores to decide how to communicate their message. I think this will change the mood and the flow of the market.

Mr. Kunii's selection of five pairs for 2021.

nike sportswear air force 1 '07
¥10,000+TAX(mita sneakers)

The Air Force 1 was introduced in 1982 as the first basketball shoe to feature the Nike Air cushioning system. Since its introduction, the Air Force 1 has developed a close relationship with street culture, and is a masterpiece that has been handed down to the present day as a historical icon. This low-top version of the long-selling model features a sophisticated form made of full-grain leather and finished in a single tone of white. With a timeless and universal silhouette, this is a truly classic item that can be purchased at any time.

adidas Originals FORUM 84 HIGH "BLUE THREAD"
¥14,000+TAX(mita sneakers)

The "Forum" has been changing the game since it dominated the basketball court in the 80s. This pair celebrates that influence of the "Forum" by featuring the same iconic blue colorway as the one released in 1984. Same straps and cross detailing as back then . Reinterpreted in premium leather, this version is a remake with a heyday vibe that recalls one of the most popular basketball shoes in history.

Puma SUEDE VTG
¥10,000+TAX(mita sneakers)

The "PUMA SUEDE," a masterpiece of court shoes released in 1968, has walked alongside the history of "PUMA" since its introduction in 1968. This release is a faithful reproduction of the model from the period when it was manufactured in the former Yugoslavia (late 1970s - early 1980s), further improving on the "SUEDE 90681" released in 2018 to achieve a silhouette closer to the original. The 7-hole and smaller toe box are also noteworthy features. The reissued version is a coveted reissue in an authentic color scheme.

new balance BB550
¥13,000+TAX(mita sneakers)

This is a much talked-about work that has been revived after a lapse of about 30 years. Released in 1989 as a basketball shoe for competitive athletes. It is a reissue of the "PRIDE 550," which gained popularity for its outstanding cushioning and stability. The renamed "BB550," this work is revived for the first time in 30 years and faithfully recreates the look and feel of that time while adopting a leather upper that is easy on the feet. The upper is made up of multiple parts, and the contrasting colors give the shoe a strong presence.

UGG M WESTSIDER LOW WEATHER
¥21,000+TAX(mita sneakers)

This pair has a sophisticated upper consisting of multi-layered construction with extra-thick touring. Waterproofing is enhanced by waterproof leather, water-repellent nylon, and a gusseted tongue construction that prevents rain and gravel from entering the shoe, while the Treadlite by UGG™ sole unit boasts outstanding lightness and durability. The use of reflectors throughout the shoe is also tasteful and matches the urban style.
