The three styles that KARHU colors.
Color in Everyday Life

The three styles that KARHU colors.

KARHU is a Finnish-born sneaker brand. The rich color palette, detail work, and retro-sporty appearance of the brand's designs, which are unique to Scandinavia, are fresh in the eyes of Japanese people like us. Did you know that KARHU was born 100 years ago? The history of Kalfu shoes, which brought Finland many medals at the Olympic Games around 1920, has a functional aspect to them as well. In this issue, we take a look at the sneaker scene from three different perspectives. A stylist, a musician, and a model.

I like the "inarticulate" and "a little bit lacking" feeling.

Do you come to "Shelf" often?

That's right. I have been coming here for more than 10 years since I was an assistant. Whenever I have a little time between jobs, I stop by. I use the shop in such a casual way. I often look at photo collections.

When you look at a photo book, do you look at it from a professional perspective?

That's not true. There was a time when I used it as a reference, of course, and maybe there are parts of it that I am still inspired by. However, I don't look at it as a study. It's just a way to relax.

So you are just having fun without work. Do you have a favorite artist or decade?

Especially when I was young, I used to look at the ones from the days of New Color. American-style landscape photography. I still like Eggleston, Stephen Shore, and others. After all, they are very universal.

What has moved you most recently?

It's not photography or art, but when his wife's niece sang a song at a piano concert (laughs). Since the birth of my own child, I find myself thinking about each of those moments as if it were my own child. Just watching them play happily on the playground equipment at the park moves me.

Do you find that the clothes you normally wear have changed since your child was born? For example, when you go to the park, you choose clothes that are easy to move around in, even if they get dirty, or you wear sneakers more than before.

I don't mind getting my clothes dirty at all, but I do want to be dressed for sliding down the slides. However, it's not like I usually dress in a way that I can't go to the park, so I avoid long coats and that's about all I'm aware of.

I have the impression that you usually wear sneakers a lot. Every time I see him, he wears a different model, one that I have never seen before. Do you have any criteria for selecting sneakers in terms of design and function?

I don't really care about things like function or comfort. Basically, I like low-volume, low-tech sneakers. I want them to become a staple in my mind, so I often choose simple ones that I will never get tired of, rather than ones that are too modern. In that sense, I like the design of the Calf sneakers I am wearing today. I have always liked mustard-colored shoes.

Trampas" is the model that first appeared in Japan in the Fall/Winter 2008 season, isn't it? Today you are wearing the new color "Golden Rod," which was introduced this spring. What kind of image did you have of the Calf brand before?

It has a retro-sporty, somewhat girly impression, in a good way, of course. It has a somewhat lacking feel to it, and I like the fact that it is not trying too hard. And yet, the coloring and use of materials are quite elaborate, and there is a pleasant surprise like, "They matched this color with this color! There is also a pleasant surprise like, "How did you match this color with this color? There are also performance lines that you can only find at sporting goods stores, right? Recently, sneakers for trekking are often worn on the streets, and I'm interested in those as well.

Do you have a particular style of footwear that you keep in mind for both your personal and professional life?

In my private life, I am not particularly conscious of what I wear. Rather, I try not to set too many rules, not only for shoes, but also for what to wear. On the other hand, in my work, I believe that the footwear is the element that most influences the overall styling. Even if I am working with shoes, I put the clothes together first and then fit the shoes in last. That's why I tend to collect sneakers and other items that I don't wear.
