A scene from a movie or TV drama, or a record or CD jacket, all of which are composed and expressed using only colors and no outlines. HOUYHNHNM's readers may have seen them on social networking sites at least once. These are items from the brand "COTTON PAN," which offers original silk-screen printed clothing as art. We asked the designer, Ms. Hikari Watanabe, and the director, Mr. Koji Watanabe, who are responsible for all the artwork that forms the core of the brand, about their passion and commitment to illustration and hand printing, as well as what they want to convey through their clothing, and took a peek behind the scenes of their creation.

The theme for the 2021SS season, which will be the start of the full-fledged launch, is "COTTON PAN IS DEAD.

COTTON PAN 2021SS COLLECTION

Why did you decide to go public again?

Koji:This season, we decided to start making clothes as an apparel brand. So instead of using ready-made bodies as before, we decided on the theme "COTTON PAN IS DEAD" as a statement of our intention to "make clothes properly! As a statement of our intention, we decided on the theme "COTTON PAN IS DEAD". It means that the past "Cotton Pan" is dead, and we are going to start anew.

I'm curious about this season's lineup.

Koji:There are two set-ups, a knit T-shirt, two more caps, and five hats. T-shirts and more T-shirts follow.

Is this setup an original body?

Koji:Yes, I am a fan of Cuban shirts, but I couldn't find one that I liked! I like Cuban shirts, but I couldn't find one that I liked, so I made one myself. We changed the front to a zip instead of a button, and it turned out great.

What is this pattern?

Koji:It's a lighter pattern. I like disposable lighters for 100 yen, but electronic cigarettes are becoming the mainstream, and these will disappear someday...I have to leave them behind! I have to keep it!

Hikari:Also, all the people I like smoke, so I sometimes express my admiration for them.

Koji:And since I also smoke, my pride and willpower as an oppressed smoker are also included (laughs).

. The design has quite a strong message, doesn't it (laughs)? . And the knit T-shirt is also unusual. . This one has the artwork embroidered on the chest.

Koji:I have always liked pocket T-shirts, but I always hated having a pocket on my left chest. It was very inconvenient to pick up a cigarette with my left hand, so I thought this pocket would be easier to use. . So maybe the cigarette is a key word in this case. I am not sure of its authenticity, but I heard a rumor that "cigarette smokers are protected from corona infection," so I may have unconsciously adopted it... (laughs)

. (laughs). The graphics on the T-shirts are also based on this season's theme?

Koji:Yes, it is. The common keyword is "the turning point of people.

You have given titles to your works on your official website so far, but you have not mentioned any motifs, have you?

Hikari:Basically, I didn't tell you. So, everyone does an amazing amount of research.

. This season, "Japan's leading techno unit," "a four-piece punk band formed in 1985," "an omnibus comedy film that captures the events that take place in cabs in five different cities," and so on. . This vertical print is also an unusual size.

Koji:This is the original size of the VHS video software.

. VHS is also a fading format, and having the lines on the back print is a new approach.

Koji:The line was "This is my way of life," so I decided to include the whole line this time! So this time, I decided to put the whole line on it! By the way, the back print is the size of a 14-inch TV screen.

It is indeed a nostalgic size! The TV in my parents' room was this size. The print on this one is exactly the size of a CD jacket.

Koji:. yes, I do. . other than that, we also have record jackets, 7 inches. Records are popular these days, and young people are buying them, and it is a culture that we want to preserve together.

And this one is based on a wallet that was carried by a character in the "1994 Academy Award-nominated film, a unique intertwining of three crime dramas that were nominated for seven Academy Awards, and which was structured like a circle.

Koji:Nowadays, people use their smartphones to pay for their purchases, and I think that wallet will become a useless item. The Corona Disaster made me feel even more so.

You are also very sensitive to the atmosphere of the times, aren't you?

Koji:As for inlines, yes. Also, this time around, we are taking on a few new challenges. For example, this one.

. This is the dog in the "sci-fi action movie about the men in black in a secret agency that controls aliens. Cute!

Hikari:I drew in more detail on the face than before, making it more dog-like (laughs).

Logo T-shirts are also very nice. But it is also typical of "Cotton Pants" that the logo is fresher than the graphics.

Koji:Yes, since last season, but I also wanted to try a simple logo, and I think this is the first time for a single-color print.

I think this is the design that fans have been waiting for, don't you?

Hikari:Maybe so, but the logo is scary because it can't be faked.

. It's the face of the brand, isn't it?

Hikari:So I didn't really want to do it... (chuckles)

(laughs) And hats, too.

Koji:The hat is a sampling of a personal favorite, the "Arnett" hat from the 90's. The hat is made of a flimsy fabric and the visor is a bit short. . It is made of a flimsy fabric and the visor is a little short.

The camp cap is also a nice touch.

Koji:I took my favorite model, "Spoonbill" by Patagonia, which I used to love, and completed it while making some modifications such as adjusting the cap so that it would not fly away in the wind. Personally, I like it very much, but the mesh fabric and indescribable coloring may make it a little difficult to wear (laugh).

Do you plan to add more items in the future?

Koji:. for the time being, I guess the status quo is maintained.

. If the scale of the project grows even larger, it will be tougher to print at home.

Koji:If that happens, I may have to rent a studio, but my children are still young, so there is nothing I can't do at home for another two years or so.

I think it would be great if you could hold a workshop for children. The two of you can have fun with your children.

Koji:That's good! I'll give it some thought.
