Three stylists unravel
Styling tips for the Puma "Wild Rider Vintage".

PUMA's "Wild Rider Vintage" sneakers have caused a stir in the sneaker world with their new design that is a cross between retro and futuristic. Three popular stylists, TEPPEI, Masaaki Ida, and Daisuke Deguchi, have been wearing the recently released sneakers in their own unique ways. We asked each of them about their own styling techniques, including how they incorporate the color, their tips and tricks, and their thought process when styling.

STYLE 02. Masaaki Ida

PROFILE

Born in 1986. A talented stylist who has worked for magazines, catalogs, major corporate advertisements, and numerous celebrities. He is well versed in fashion history and culture, from mode to basics, and is known for his stoic visuals that utilize his knowledge and intuition.

Nerdy wear from everyday tips.

Ms. Ida's image is one of mode styling, mixing high brands without hesitation, but how do you usually coordinate sneakers?

Ida:My fashion and styling is rather about change. When I wear sneakers, my mindset comes out, doesn't it? When I wear standard sneakers, I am expressing my unchanging self. However, I don't really feel that I have to wear something that I like. I do a lot of work for large companies, so sometimes it's what the client wants, and sometimes it's my own fashion proposals for magazines. With these various restrictions, I try to create styling that gives me a sense of freshness.

You make decisions based on your own intuition at the time, don't you?

Ida:It's more like intuition... For example, if I were to use a pearl necklace, I would want to wear it with American cargo pants and a Ralph Lauren shirt, not in the current feminine mode style. That means it would look fresh in my mind. Because I have respect for fashion and culture, I want to shift it a bit, rather than just going with the same style and making it look like a costume.

I see. I can see some of your styling points now. Do you incorporate that kind of freshness in your styling this time?

Ida:The inspiration for this issue came from the manga "Touch. I like Mitsuru Adachi and have been reading "Touch" for a while now. The houses in "Touch" are very ordinary, but the furniture and music in them are very stylish. I was interested in the clothes in the house. I thought Minami's white pants were cute and fresh. I also noticed that the sneakers were an update of running shoes from the 70s, so I added a navy polo shirt that reminded me of a sports referee, and matched it with white Margiela pants. Including the sneakers, the coordination is my interpretation of the retro and current mood.

I was surprised to see the keyword "touch! Styling inspiration comes from everywhere in our daily lives, doesn't it? Could you give us some styling tips for the sneakers you wore this time, Ida-san?

Ida:When I saw the "Wild Rider Vintage," with its retro and voluminous feel, I thought it would be interesting to pair it with a fashionable knit from "Namacheco" or a structured silhouette from "Midori Kawa" in a free-spirited way. High-end brands of the past tend to give off a luxurious or tight atmosphere, so I think it's possible to wear them with these brands.

Ida:I personally think it is better to enjoy these sneakers on the retro side, although it also fits with my current mood. I'd like to match the retro feel created by the suede upper and coloring with white denim and a white T-shirt to create a casual but slightly nerdy atmosphere. Nard here means not only tacky, but also gentlemanly. It's a little classy, but also old-fashioned. I thought such an atmosphere would go well with these sneakers. Also, pants in the world are getting thicker, so it's better to have this kind of volume on the feet.
