Design of the Tool

Logic of design without aesthetic formality by E5eyevan.

When you hear the word "design," what image comes to mind? If you look up the word "design" in a dictionary, you will find the following meaning. It is "a comprehensive plan for the design of a product that considers and coordinates the material, functional, and aesthetic qualities of the product with the various requirements of technology, production, and consumption.

EYEVAN" was created based on the concept of "glasses that can be worn. E5 eyevan, the fifth eyewear brand derived from E5 eyevan, was started by eliminating the "aesthetic formality" of such designs and pursuing the essence of the product as a tool. However, the resulting products are beautiful and truly "wearable.

The background and process that led to the creation of this new brand is also the path of designer Hirotaka Nakagawa's questioning and challenging of "design. In this interview, we will trace the path of Hirotaka Nakagawa with Taisuke Nakamuro of "Murofis," an old acquaintance and Ivan fan.

. a design that was made to be, like something from the natural world.

Nakamuro: Recently, I have been talking with designers and often hear that their approach to manufacturing has changed at Corona. When I was invited to an exhibition of a certain brand, I found that the collection was completely different from the previous one. The military-inspired shapes remained the same, and the designs were almost unchanged, but the dyeing methods and fabric gimmicks were different from those used in the past.

When I asked him why he did so, he said, "I only wanted what I really needed in this situation. He said that he wanted to wear military wear itself rather than modified designs. . He said that he wanted to wear military wear itself rather than modified designs, and that this was the only way to reflect his own tastes and preferences.

When I heard that, I remembered what Mr. Nakagawa said. I wondered if people involved in manufacturing and design would change their way of thinking when the corona or the situation in the world changes. Or, I wondered if they could create a different starting point.

Nakagawa: The people around me who are making things have changed quite a bit. . I don't know, maybe they are naïve.

Nakamuro: I'm sensitive, I'm sure. . I'm an insensitive person, and I don't see any changes at all. But I think sensitive people will see changes in various areas.

. It is a profession where it is easy to absorb what is going on in the world and give shape to it, isn't it?

Nakagawa: It is true that I want to output everything. It comes naturally to me. Everything I see, eat, and experience is out in the open.

Nakamuro: I guess input is very important. In my case, even if I see a Torx screw, I can't input the information, and it just drifts away. Mr. Nakagawa, you have absorbed this situation at Corona straight away, and it has had a great influence on you, hasn't it?

Nakagawa: Life changes, doesn't it? You no longer take the train, go to the office, and work, but instead take a walk and look at greenery more often. . These changes in my life are also reflected in my designs.

When this item was completed, what kind of emotions came into your mind?

Nakagawa: . In a sense, it is not within the scope of my design, since it was created through the accumulation of functions. . It is a design that came about by necessity, just as things in the natural world do. . So I was a little unsure if I was doing the right thing or not.

. so I was a little nervous about showing it to the representatives. But I got a very good response. The sales members also said, "That's nice. . Then I finally started to enjoy it, and since it was created based on an idea that was the complete opposite of other brands, many things became clear to me.

Nakamuro: They are very good glasses, aren't they? There are several people around me who wear Eyevol's glasses at home because they are "easy," and they strike a balance between lightness and comfort in terms of functionality and decorative design. E5 eyevan" is a combination of these elements. That's what makes E5 eyevan so special. It's easy to wear when you are at home, and you can also wear it when you go out. That's why it's the ultimate. People who use "Eyevol" at home wear "Eyevan 7285" when they go out.

Nakagawa: I think that "Eyevol" is probably the closest to this. That brand is designed for the active scene, but as a result, it is also suitable for home use.

Do you feel as if you were wearing sportswear as loungewear?

Nakagawa: That's exactly right. But in the case of "E5 eyevan," it is not limited to certain scenes. It is a necessary tool for daily life. Maybe that's the difference between the two.

Nakamuro: They really are so ultimate and wonderful glasses that I, as a fan, worry about other brands. But when I put them all together, they all have their own charms. Ivan 7285" is decorative, "10 Ivan" is simple but has weight, and "Eyevol" is easy to use in active situations, as Mr. Nakagawa said. There really is a clear difference between the two.

Nakagawa: With the creation of "E5 eyevan," it became easier to design for other brands. Also, when people ask me, "Why does E5 eyevan 7285 have this kind of design? I can simply say, "Because it's cool. It's easy for me to say so, and it makes me happy.
