A good product is one that has a lot of thought put into it.
Descente Ortelaine is carefully made by the hands of craftsmen, and you also make furniture. When you look at each other's products, is there any link between them?
Yellowtailoka:The furniture I make may look like an industrial product at a glance, but in fact, a lot of the work is done by hand. I like that kind of work. I don't really like the kind of furniture that is made by a craftsman, but rather, I like the kind of furniture that has a hint of craftsmanship. I would rather sell under a brand name rather than having my personal name at the forefront. That's why I feel some sympathy for the Descente Ortelaine brand, where such a large number of products are actually made by craftspeople.
Do you sometimes choose clothes from a craftsman's point of view?
Yellowtailoka:I want to support makers and brands that are doing things on their own. I also like brands that are very particular about what they do. I like the brand "Enns & Means" and wear it often. In fact, I recently had a pair of white work pants made.
Are these the pants you are wearing today?
Yellowtailoka:Yes, they are. They are double-knee, but the regular ones are not suitable for summer because the fabric is too thick. . so I ordered them in a thinner fabric. Also, when carrying furniture, the rivets on the pants could scratch the furniture, or the paint could be transferred without noticing the stains. In order to eliminate such problems, I had the pants made white so that they would not get scratched and so that I would be able to see the stains. . I also had them made slightly shorter in length. . because when they are rolled up, wood shavings would accumulate at the hems.
I see what you mean.
Yellowtailoka:Yes, that's right. When I bought work clothes and tried them on, I found that some of them did not fit well. So I thought I had no choice but to come up with my own designs and have them made. Practicality is important, but I don't want to wear something strange. I want to wear good clothes.
What do you consider to be a "good product"?
Yellowtailoka:I think a good product is one that has a lot of feelings. It is love for a thing. For example, I think it is wonderful to see a piece of furniture made by a father as a carpenter on a Sunday. He made it out of love for his family or because he wanted it for himself. I always want to keep that kind of feeling in mind.
The 70-year-old house was renovated by Mr. Yellowtailoka. The shed in the foreground is his wife Kazuko's baked goods studio.
In that sense, there is a story between you and Descente Ortelaine's products, isn't there?
Yellowtailoka:You are right. I had trust in the two people who recommended this brand to me, and when I actually tried it on, I found it really attractive. That's why I still use it and even recommend it to my family (laughs).
What do you expect from Descente Ortelaine in the future?
Yellowtailoka:There used to be down pants, but they don't seem to make them anymore. I hope they will make them again. I used to wear them in the workshop. Hopefully, I would be happy if the silhouette were a little looser, but that's very personal (laughs). (Laughs.) Now that the combination of "Mizusawa Down" and "GORE-TEX" has been released, there's nothing more to say. That's all I need to say (laughs).
