A GIFT TO MYSELF Vol.01
Luxury for the wise. The best gift you can give yourself.

With only a few days left in the year, many of us are thinking about rewarding ourselves at the end of the year. With so many options available, what have the adults who have enjoyed a full range of fashion choices been able to get their hands on so far? We asked Mariko Nakayama of Madison Blue, Yasunari Miyazaki of GOD SELECTION XXX, and Tomoyuki Tanaka, musician and producer, to talk about gifts for themselves. We asked them to talk about their ideas on gifts for themselves, and their perspectives on choosing gifts for themselves.

02 : Interview with Yasunari Miyazaki The criteria for selecting things sharpened by shopping.

. First of all, please introduce the items you have prepared for us.

Miyazaki:I got this bag last Christmas. It is from "Goyard" and I had it personalized with the logo. My dog wears a collar with the same pattern.

Why did you buy this one?

Miyazaki:I was using a similar bag from "Goyard," but it did not have a zipper. I felt a little insecure when I traveled with it. When I was looking for something better, I came across this bag. Hiroshi Fujiwara was with me at the time, and I decided to put the "Fragment Design" logo on it in addition to my own brand logo.

This bag was purchased at Isetan last Christmas. On the back of the bag, the letters of her brand "SEQUEL" are printed in the "Goyard" font. She also has a pouch with the same pattern and her dog's collar.

Is Goyard a special brand for you?

Miyazaki:It's not that they are very special, but I get the impression that people who use this brand have a certain elegance about them, and I really like that image. I thought it would be interesting to combine these bags with my kind of fashion.

How do you feel about it?

Miyazaki:In recent years, I have finally been able to go on overseas business trips , so it is very useful. . I usually travel empty-handed, but when I have a lot of luggage, I use this bag. I usually go without hand luggage, but when I have a lot of luggage, I use this bag.

Another prize is a Rolex watch.

Miyazaki:. this is my reward for this year. I love vintage "Rolex" watches, and the "Explorer I" is one of my favorites. . This is a 1966 with what is known as a tropical dial.

The first watch I ever bought was actually an "Explorer I," and I have several vintage ones, and I think the way the same model looks different depending on its age is unique. . So I look at various watches to find the one I like best.

. "Explorer I" by Rolex. He usually keeps it in a jewelry case collaborated with "Fragment Design" and "Bejeweled M".

Do you ever choose to reward yourself with an experience, such as a meal or a trip?

Miyazaki:Not very often. I sometimes treat someone to dinner for their birthday or a celebration, but I never do so for myself. . Because of my job, I usually have many opportunities to eat with various people.

Of course I like to travel, but I think it's all about timing. Rather than aiming for a birthday or something and pushing the schedule, I think it is more memorable to go on a trip at a moment's notice and experience it as one pleases.

What influences your perspective in choosing things?

Miyazaki:. Harajuku is my hometown, so the influence I received there may have been very significant. I also spend a lot of time with Hiroshi Fujiwara, and I have the opportunity to ask him what kind of things he chose when he was my age. While talking about these things, I check out things that interest me. Hiroshi has a lot of experience, so there is a lot to learn from him.

I'm curious as to what will be the thing that tugs at your heartstrings in the midst of all this.

Miyazaki:. I like simple designs. . And whether it can be used for a long time or not, or whether it is valuable to me or not, are still important points. . As I get older, I don't waste money as much anymore. I will turn 33 this year, and I used to buy and try all kinds of things. There were times when I would buy things just because they were trendy, and that was it. . Through such experiences, however, I have come to choose only what is valuable to me.

. So, as you accumulated more and more experience in shopping, your senses became sharper and sharper.

Miyazaki:After all, even if you buy something that is like an introductory product at first, you will eventually want something better. . Then, after doing proper preliminary research, I wanted to buy something that would make me feel good about myself. . I had a bit of a frustrating experience when I bought a camera in the past. I learned a lot from that experience.

But I'm glad now that I did. I don't like to dismiss things without having bought them or experienced them. Of course, people have their own likes and dislikes. But I think it is better to do so only after actually using or experiencing something.

I think that birthdays and other milestones are good occasions to make such purchases.

Miyazaki:New Year, your birthday, your brand's anniversary, and Christmas. There are many events, aren't there? I may buy some other small treats every month, but I feel like I want to buy something special for myself at these milestones.

Also, I think it is important to consider what kind of feelings and situation you are buying the item for. For example, buying a Tiffany accessory at the main store in New York makes you feel more excited and special than buying it in Japan. And it becomes a lasting memory. I would like to make purchases in such a way that there is added value that money cannot buy.

Lastly, what kind of year was this for you, Mr. Miyazaki , and what do you want next year to be like?

Miyazaki:I feel that the end is finally in sight, with the easing of restrictions on Corona, business trips abroad, more foreigners in town, and so on. I have enjoyed in my own way the three years of the Corona disaster, but this year I have the feeling that my daily life has finally returned. This month I am opening a store in Nagoya, and next year will be the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the brand, so I am determined to do my best with a tighter focus. . I have never done one thing for 10 years. I am fired up for next year's 10th anniversary. We are in the process of preparing for it now, but it is going to be even busier, so please keep an eye out for us in the future.
