So, what kind of inspiration do creators receive from such scents, and what do they envision? This is the story of three creators living in Tokyo and the perfumes of "LE LABO" born in New York.

Sound and aroma that changes with use.

One of your keywords is "city," isn't it?

Mars89:It's an unconscious theme, but many of the songs I actually like are music that sounds perfect for urban living. While I am saved by music for urban dwellers, I am also an urban dweller, so I choose and create such music more often.

In a previous article, you said something like, "Music creates space. . Please tell us how you see the relationship between space and music.

Mars89:To take an easy example, even in an ordinary scene in a movie, the background music playing at that moment can somehow convey the main character's scene, emotions, and the flow of the story, can't it? In this way, I think music can create a background story. In a club setting, I select music while thinking about what kind of state the music can take the people in the space to. . Of course, the music must be combined with other elements such as lighting to create the space.

When you write a song, is there anything that you do more diligently than usual?

Mars89:I read books and watch movies on a daily basis, but when I am in songwriting mode, I may be more conscious of the direction and worldview of a movie or book rather than its story or plot.

What genres of such works do you like? . In the past, works such as "Akira" were mentioned as masterpieces.

Mars89:. In movies, I've always liked science fiction and horror. As for books, I prefer William Gibson, Philip K. Dick, and so-called cyberpunk books set in the near future the most. . I also prefer books that are not too grand in scale. It's easier for me to think in terms of myself.

You have always been conscious of speaking out against the suffering of modern society and the ruthlessness of neoliberalism, haven't you? Is there any connection between these ideas and your music?

Mars89:In the so-called neoliberal value system, it is important to be able to sell . If you make something, what good does it do? Does it have value? Or, is it productive or not? But I like the fact that it has no value in that sense. Like the motivation to create a song, it is enough that only I have value. I leave the rest to the listener, and if someone finds some value in it, I am happy.

From this point of view, dance music that is not bound by words may be free.

Mars89:I believe that dance music has the power to liberate. . Among these, I personally place great importance on bass. I don't know how to put it, but I think the power of bass is amazing, especially in a club setting. It hits my body, not my ears, and I feel its overwhelming power. Akemi Edo of the band Jagatara once said, "I want to be saved, but not by religion, but by music.

. Maybe listening to music and forgetting about the hardships of everyday life is one way to help people forget.

Mars89:There is also the cathartic experience of watching a movie, for example. I think the power of bass can do something similar. It feels good to be hit by the overwhelming power of loud sound.

You chose "THÉ NOIR 29" after much deliberation at the Le Labo store this time.

Mars89:I usually use perfume when I want to inspire myself, and I usually choose fragrances that have a strong habit, such as cedarwood or musk scents, but this scent has a good overall balance, so I chose it as a daily use scent. I chose it as a scent for daily use because of its overall balance. I wanted to use it as a little bit of a boost on an ordinary day.

NOIR" means black. I wonder if the perfume was a nod to your perfume, or if the black nail polish suits you.

Mars89:As it happens, black is calming and my favorite color.

Mars89 asked us to create a playlist using fragrance as a source of inspiration.

Mars89:This is background music that you can listen to in your daily life and get positive energy from it, as if it is a little uplifting for your everyday life. Although this playlist is different from our usual club-oriented playlist, we have chosen songs that are somehow compatible with the motivation behind this scent.

Do you choose bass music differently between DJing and playlists?

Mars89:I think about what I'm going to play it through; when I'm DJing, I want to make sure the sound is powerful when it comes out of those big speakers in the club. The playlist will probably be listened to at home, so I want the songs to sound good through the speakers or earphones at home.

I felt a new side of Mars89, who has a strong image as a heavy club musician.

Mars89:: "Inner City Life" by Goldie, "Paper Planes" by M.I.A., "Safe From Harm" by Massive Attack, etc. , I think this playlist will be a cheerful background music for daily life when you listen to it.
